PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Lion Kim
Age: 15
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 30th
Residence: Lake Mary, Fla.
The Skinny: Like it or not, the name fits this kid.
Yeah, he admits to being your typical, 15-year-old chatterbox in the classroom. But on the golf course, Lion Kim is what his first name says he is. As quiet as a lion stalking its prey, Kim walks 18 holes with fierce focus and a maturity you'd hope to find in the king of any jungle. ''In school I'm actually very talkative. Very, very talkative,'' said Kim, who was born in Korea and came to the United States in 1998. ''But when it comes to golf, when it comes to tournaments, I'm a completely different person. I keep it quiet, I keep it focused on each shot.'' Many kids would tell you the same, because it sounds like the right thing to say. But when Kim says it, you believe him. You believe him, because most kids would have folded under the pressure Kim was under Nov. 16 during the final round of the IJGT at Shingle Creek event in Orlando, Fla. Most kids wouldn't have been able to recover from three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 14, 15 and 16, and finish with two pars in 25 mph winds to secure victory. ''My parents tried to get me to play tennis, basketball, any sport that involved running,'' said Kim, who is in good shape now. ''I didn't like any of them. Then they introduced me to golf, where I could walk a lot, walk 18 holes. I fell in love with it after a week at golf camp. I haven't stopped since.'' He's Lion, but not lying, when he says he can't get enough. ''Even on my off days, I have my dad drop me off at the golf course to practice,'' said Kim, who also receives lessons from Mike Bender, coach of PGA Tour player Zach Johnson. ''I've also started working out a lot. My dad stressed the importance of weightlifting. It pays off. Not just lengthwise, it makes you mentally stronger too.'' Currently No. 30 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, Kim had a successful summer, winning events on both the AJGA and IJGT and earning third-team Rolex Junior All-America status. He's definitely someone to keep an eye on, given the fact you probably won't forget his name. ''My dad wanted to give me a name that no one really had,'' said Kim. ''I would have to say that the whole thing with Tiger, it probably has something to do with that too.''
