LEVY: BUILDING PERSPECTIVE,
NOT BURNOUT, KEY TO COLLEGE

Study, golf and sleep with a little eating and socializing mixed in. That's the college golfer's life in a nutshell.

As the men's golf coach at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College I know this life all too well. Not just because I see my team live this way every day, but because I've lived the same focused life myself as a former team captain at Iowa State University.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Mu Hu
Age: 14
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 129th (02.22.04)
Residence: Celebration, Fla.
The Skinny: After attending the David Leadbetter Junior Golf Academy for two years in Bradenton, Fla., Mu and his family moved to the Orlando area, where the David Leadbetter Academy at ChampionsGate is located.

''Being at the Junior Academy will help you practice, but if you stay too long, you do more talking than practicing with all the kids you know,'' Hu said.

Hu is a freshman at the Crenshaw School for the Performing Arts in Orlando, where Ty Tryon attended after qualifying for the PGA Tour at age 17. He goes to the Leadbetter Academy after school each day to practice and receives an occasional lesson from Leadbetter.

''He teaches me maybe 30-40 minutes twice in one month . . . to check out my swing and see how everything is going,'' said Hu.

Being close to pros like Tryon, Charles Howell III and David Gossett, all Leadbetter students, has helped Hu develop.

''It helps me to see them practice every once in a while,'' said Hu, who won the 2003 Florida State Junior Championship in the 12-14 division.

RECRUITING CENTRAL

Much has been written about ''Little League'' parents and undue pressure placed on children participating in sports and there is some concern about the stress on young athletes competing in college. These concerns prompted the NCAA to take steps in recent years to improve ''student-athlete welfare.''

The NCAA is addressing the situation in various areas including health and safety, student-athlete/coach relationship, fairness, openness and honesty and student-athlete involvement in the overall educational experience.

These topics are being applied to recruiting, practice and playing demands, opportunity to play, classroom requirements and other criteria.
