TOURNAMENT RECAPS

When: Feb. 12-13
Where: Hilton Head, S.C.
Winners: Kyle Stanley (68-69--137), Gig Harbour, Wash./Angela Park (69-74--143), Torrance, Calif.
Runners-up: Brian Harman (72-67--139), Savannah, Ga./Jane Rah (73-70--143), Torrance, Calif.
Skinny: Kyle Stanley got his revenge Feb. 13 at the MCI Junior Heritage. About eight months after losing to Golfweek's top-ranked junior Brian Harman, 1 up, in the second round of the 2004 U.S. Junior, Stanley held off Harman, playing in his final junior event, to win by two shots at Harbour Town. ''I guess I had a pretty good practice round,'' Stanley told The Island Packet. ''The funny thing is, I usually play a draw, but when I got down here, I started hitting a lot of fades. I just played the fade all week and it worked well.'' After a first-round, 3-under 68, Stanley didn't fade from the top, finishing strong with 69 to improve his Golfweek/Titleist ranking to 40th. His 137 total was a shot better than the old record shared by Charles Howell III
(1996) and David Gossett (1997).
Harman followed his opening 72 with a tournament-low 67 to finish second, the same place he finished a week later in the third biennial Jones Cup on Sea Island, Ga. In the girls' division, Angela Park made par on the second playoff hole to beat Jane Rah. Rah, who started the final round four shots back, forced the playoff with 70. The comeback ended when it took Rah two shots to get out of a pot bunker on the deciding extra hole.

The Junior will be the first USGA championship played at the P.B. Dye-designed course which opened in 1992 and was later revised by Hale Irwin. The course has hosted two Champions Tour events, the Boone Valley Classic from 1996 to 2000 and the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Match Play in 2001.
The 2007 championship, the first Junior Amateur to be held in Missouri, will be played July 23-28. This year's Junior Amateur will be played at Longmeadow (Mass.) Country Club July 18-23 and the 2006 site has not been announced.

The Junior Solheim Cup features teams of 12 players from the United States and Europe playing a Ryder Cup-style format of six four-ball, six foursome and 12 singles matches. The United States won the inaugural event in 2002 in Minnesota, while the European side evened the series in Sweden in 2003.

The donation is earmarked for the AJGA's Achieving Competitive Excellence Grant, which provides competitive golf opportunities for young golfers regardless of financial resources. The AJGA developed the ACE Grant to offset the costs of playing a national junior golf schedule for players without financial backing. Since 2003, ACE Grants have helped 63 juniors play in AJGA events they otherwise might not have attended. For more information, contact Mandy Riceman with The First Tee at 904-940-4324.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Jon Curran
Age: 17
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 3rd
Residence: Hopkinton, Mass.
The Skinny: It's March, and if Jon Curran walked out of his house today in Hopkinton, Mass., he could still build a snowman. Fortunately for Curran, the third-ranked junior in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings, he's one of the few lucky New Englanders who gets to spend most of the winter in the sun, and on a golf course. Which, of course, doesn't give him much time to build snowmen. The lesson goes, then, that the less snowmen you make on the golf course, the less snowmen you'll make off of it. Curran's latest escape was Feb. 18-20 to Ocean Forest GC on Sea Island, Ga., for the third biennial Jones Cup Invitational. Curran, a 12th-grader headed to Vanderbilt next year, shot 79-80-77--236 to tie for 64th among one of the best fields in amateur golf. ''I wish I played better,'' said Curran, who won the Massachusetts high school individual state title last fall and also led Hopkinton High to the state championship. ''But it was a great week. They just treat us so well here.''
Among the perks was a chance for Curran to play his first round with future teammate Luke List, a sophomore at Vanderbilt, No. 15 in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings.
''He's great to play with,'' Curran said. ''I'm really looking forward to next year. I've made a few visits (to Vanderbilt) and they're all great guys.'' Curran's remaining junior schedule is thin, but includes the Scott Robertson Memorial and ''probably'' the AJGA's Thunderbird International Junior. After that, the focus shifts to all the big amateur events. ''The Azalea, Northeast Am, all that good stuff,'' said Curran, smiling. Apparently, it's not such a bad thing to be Jon Curran right now. Walking away from the scoring table after the final round of the Jones Cup, someone asked Curran is he was heading back home to the cold. ''No,'' he said, ''I'm actually heading to Florida now.'' Rough winter.
