Baldry: Persistence pays for Lundskog Amber Lundskog learned at an early age to expect the unexpected. Although she's grown up in a time when the fast lane is fashionable and 13 is the new 30, Lundskog manages to keep things in perspective.
Last month, the San Diego native played in her first AJGA tournament at the
ripe old age of 16. Lundskog finished third at the rain-shortened Woodlands
event and earned full exempt status for the remainder of the year. With the
AJGA's recent lowering of its minimum age requirement to 12, however, it's
safe to say Lundskog got a slow start.

NEWS AND NOTES * With three top-5 AJGA finishes to her credit, including a victory at last year's Solutions Consulting Junior Classic, Nannette Hill of Pelham Manor, N.Y., knows how to perform under pressure. The Pelham High School junior will play in the LPGA's Sybase Classic May 20-23. Held at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y., the Sybase Classic's field includes Grace Park -- two-time Rolex Junior Player of the Year and winner of the LPGA's first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. * Ernie Els announced the launching of the Ernie Els Junior Tour, a joint venture between the Ernie Els Foundation and the South African Golf Foundation. ''My brother and I both played in tournaments staged by the SAGF and during that time we made lots of friends,'' Els said when speaking of his reasons for backing a junior tour in South Africa. ''Many of those people are still good friends of mine today and in some cases, they are still my opposition. Even someone like Phil Mickelson I first met when we were 13 or 14 years old.'' All tournaments will be played over 54 holes with the field of 96 being trimmed to 60 after 18 holes. Els expects the tour will be expanded. ''I would like to see the tour grow and become as strong as possible,'' he said. ''Ideally there should be a number of events staged all over the country and I would also like to see a number of our juniors traveling overseas.'' The tour is aimed at girls, as well as boys. * Kevin Chappell, Patton Kizzire, Will Osborne and Garrett Sapp have been selected to compete for the U.S. team at the 2004 Toyota Junior World Golf Cup. The competition will be held June 22-24 at Bear's Paw Golf Club near Shiga, Japan. Arkansas coach Mike Ketcham has been tabbed to coach the American squad. Chappell, a senior from Buchanan High School in Fresno, Calif., will attend UCLA in the fall. A senior at Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Kizzire is an AJGA first-team All-American and three-time West Alabama High School Player of the Year. Osborne, a senior at Wichita Falls (Texas) High School, was a second-team Polo Golf Junior All-American and was ranked No. 15 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings in 2003. A native of Cerritos, Calif., Sapp was the two-time MVP of his Gahr High School team. The Toyota World Junior Cup will be entering its 13th year. The United States has won five team titles at the event, its last coming in 2000. U.S. medalists include David Gossett, Joel Kribel, Sal Spallone, Justin Roof and Hunter Mahan. To be eligible for the competition a junior must be an incoming college freshman that has signed a letter of intent to compete and not reached his 19th birthday by date of the World Junior Cup. * Short shots: Top-ranked Paula Creamer has accepted a sponsor exemption into the LPGA's John Q. Hammons Hotel Classic to be played Sept. 10-12. . . . The team of Cap Caponi and David Lindquist won the first Florida State Golf Association Junior-Senior Championship April 25 at Riverwood Golf Club in Port Charlotte. Caponi and Lindquist, of Orlando, were three strokes back from the leaders after their first-round 68. The team came out in the final round to shoot a 9-under 63, the low round of the tournament, to finish with a 131 total. . . . The Freshman of the Year award is to be named after college and PGA Tour standout Phil Mickelson the Golf Coaches Association of America announced. The Phil Mickelson Award will be awarded to the top freshman player in NCAA Divisions I, II and III following each Division's championship. . . . How difficult is the transition from playing junior golf to competing at the
college level? College coaches say course length and difficulty add several
strokes per round to junior golf scoring averages.
The course for the 2004 men's Pac-10 Conference Championship was 7,435
yards, and the women's Pac-10 tournament was played at 6,405 yards. The
longest course in U.S. Open history was Bethpage at 7,214 yards, and the
2003 U.S. Women's Open at Pumpkin Ridge¹s Witch Hollow Course played 6,550
yards.
Girls competing in high school and junior golf should play frequent practice
rounds from the tees closest to 6,000 yards because that is where they will
tee it up in college golf. Boys also should be practicing from the back tees
and getting some wear on the grips of their long irons.
