Curran shot a final round 66 to hold off 2001 champion Webb Simpson, who led Curran by one shot entering the final round. Hoggard: U.S. Juniors,
democracy in action

With all apologies to the Walker and Curtis cups -- the best events in golf, amateur or otherwise -- there is another pair of can't-miss tournaments quickly approaching on the summer calendar. And, unlike the beloved biennial matches, entry into one of these championships is as democratic as they come.

These events are the people's championships for juniors. No priority ranking or spendy membership fees required. The U.S. Junior and U.S. Girls' Junior, like most U.S. Golf Association events, award just one thing -- good play regardless of economic standing or a parent's pedigree.

RECRUITING CENTRAL

The campus visit is the most important factor in the college recruiting/selection process for student-athletes and non-athletes, however, there is some valuable information about colleges and universities that prospective students can gather during campus visits or from a distance.

First, does a school have what you want to study and can you meet the standards to be admitted? Are there alternative courses of study if you decide to change majors? Some students are interested in the backgrounds of the professors, the academic reputation of the institution and the size of the library. While others are more concerned with academic support staff and programs. Are tutors available if you get in over your head?

Do your homework before applying to any schools. It will help you in asking questions during your campus visits and can help you decide if an institution should even be on your list.
