Golfweek Junior Golf Report - 06.17.04
Vol. 4 No. 12

TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: Bubba Conlee Junior
Course: Cherokee Valley Golf Club
When: June 8-10
Where: Olive Branch, Miss.
Winner: Adam Mitchell, Chattanooga, Tenn. (66-71-60--197)/Jacqui Concolino, Orlando, Fla. (69-72-71--212)
Runners-up: Jordan Payne, West Memphis, Ark. (67-69-70--206), Ryan LeFevre, Boca Raton, Fla. (65-69-72--206)/Candace Schepperle, Hoover, Ala. (76-71-74--221)
Skinny: Adam Mitchell saved his best for last. Trailing by two shots after two rounds, Mitchell torched the par-72, 6,800-yard Cherokee Valley Golf Club on his way to a course-record 60 and a nine-stroke victory at the Bubba Conlee Junior. Mitchell, whose final round included 12 birdies and six pars, finished at 19-under 197.
The 17-year-old from Chattanooga, Tenn., opened with 66 and followed with 71. Late in his record round, Mitchell had opportunities to move to 13 under and beyond but missed four birdie attempts from inside 10 feet.
Mitchell, who has played in two Golfweek/Titleist ranked events since Sept. 1, is averaging 73.0 in five rounds. He won the Plantation Junior Golf Tour's Tommy Armour Golf Colonial Junior Nov. 30 and tied for 33rd at the Bobby Chapman Invitational in September.
Second-round leader Jordan Payne tied for second with Ryan LeFevre at 10-under 206.
Jacqui Concolino posted a 4-under 212 total to finish nine shots clear of Candace Schepperle (221).

Event: AJGA Ping Indianapolis Junior
Course: Bridgewater Club
When: June 8-10
Where: Carmel, Ind.
Winner: Arnond Vongvanij, Bradenton, Fla. (76-68-69--213)/Amanda Blumenherst, Scottsdale, Ariz. (75-75-72--222)
Runner-up: Chris Smith, Alpharetta, Ga. (72-74-67--213)/Megan Grehan, Mamaroneck, N.Y. (78-72-72--222)
Skinny: Even rain couldn't dampen the quality of play during the final round of the Ping Indianapolis Junior. After finishing 54 holes tied at 3-under 213, it took Arnond Vongvanij and Chris Smith four playoff holes before Vongvanij chipped in from 25 feet for birdie to take home the title.
Both made par on the first three playoff holes. On the fourth playoff hole, Smith's approach shot landed 15 feet from the flagstick, and Vongvanij's approach fell just off the front of the green.
''I just wanted to chip it into a place that I could make par from,'' said Vongvanij. ''I hit it well and in line, and I was lucky that it happened to fall in.''
On the girls' side, Amanda Blumenherst made a downward, left-to-right breaking 35-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Megan Grehan. Both shot even-par 72 in the final round for 222 totals.
Blumenherst, 17, took a four-stroke lead into No. 17, but when Grehan birdied the final two holes to move two strokes back, Blumenherst couldn't make bogey on No. 18 for the victory. Blumenherst birdied the first playoff hole for the triumph.
''My goal was to put it close for a two-putt, but I put good speed on it and it went in,'' said Blumenherst.

Event: AJGA Lubbock Junior
Course: Rawls Course at Texas Tech
When: June 8-10
Where: Lubbock, Texas
Winners: Guillermo Chavez, Clovis, N.M. (67-73-71--211)/Taylor Leon, Dallas (73-72-68--213)
Runners-up: Joshua Ray, New Braunfels, Texas (72-72-67--211), Mark Jones, Odessa, Texas (70-71-70--211)/Lauren Espinosa, Hickory Creek, Texas (73-70-72--215)
Skinny: Guillermo Chavez couldn't have asked for a better ending to his three-day stint at the top of the leaderboard at the AJGA Lubbock Junior. After having a three-stroke lead over his competition the first day and being tied for the lead the second, Chavez needed extra holes to edge Joshua Ray and Mark Jones. All three players tied at 5-under-par 211.
Chavez, 17, shot a 67-73-71 for his first AJGA title.
''I just wanted to come out today and play like I've been playing the last couple days,'' he said. ''My putting was really good today. I made five birdies.''
In the girls' division, Taylor Leon picked up the title by shooting 3-under 213.
Leon, 17, said her goal was to stay 3 or 4 under, and if she did that, she thought she'd win. She carded four birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 7 and 8, which put her at 3 under by the end of the first nine. On the back, she shot a 1-under 35 for a 68.
''I'm very relieved,'' she said. ''I was extremely nervous on my last putt, but now I can say I'm very happy with my performance today,'' she said.
This marks Leon's second AJGA triumph. Rounding out the top three in the girls' division were Lauren Espinosa, 17, with a 215 total and Stefanie Page, 17, at 217.

Event: AJGA Ringgold Telephone Co. Junior
Course: WindStone Golf Club
When: June 8-10
Where: Ringgold, Ga.
Winners: Matt Savage, Louisville, Ky. (69-71-66--206)/Catherina Wang, Sarasota, Fla. (63-74-71--208)
Runners-up: Brent Witcher, Duluth, Ga. (70-67-71--208)/Marci Turner, Tompkinsville, Ky. (75-73-68--216), Whitney Myers, East Berlin, Pa. (72-69-75--216)
Skinny: With a rattle in the cup and a pump of the fist, Matt Savage, 17, took the outright lead with an eagle on his 53rd hole and held on to win the boys' division title at the Ringgold Telephone Co. Junior.
At even par through two rounds (69-71), Savage was three strokes behind the lead going into the final round, but after an eagle on the par-5 17th things changed. Savage took control of the top spot in the boys' field, made par at No. 18 and finished with a 4-under 66 and a 206 total.
''I don't know if I've ever put three good rounds together like this in a tournament,'' Savage said.
Brent Witcher placed second at 208. Michael Green, Tyler Dingman and Michael Saari each shot 210 for third.
In the girls' division, Catherina Wang, 15, coasted to victory in the final round with a 1-over 71.
Wang, who set the women's course record with 63 in Tuesday's first round, bounced back from a second-round 74 to win by eight strokes with a 208 total. Wang's finish was her first AJGA triumph.
''It makes me really confidant going into the summer,'' she said.
With the only round under par in the girls' division Thursday, Marci Turner shot 68 for a tournament total of 216 placing her tied for second with Whitney Myers.

Event: AJGA Nike Golf Junior at Quad Cities
Course: Glynns Creek Golf Course
When: June 8-10
Where: Long Grove, Iowa
Winners: Morgan Hoffmann, Wyckoff, N.J. (68-70-73--211)/Brianna Do, Lakewood, Calif. (72-68-73--213)
Runners-up: Minghao Wang, Bradenton, Fla. (73-70-70--213)/Taylore Karle, Scottsdale, Ariz. (74-78-71--223)
Skinny: In only his third AJGA event, Morgan Hoffmann fought through steady wind and rain to shoot a final-round 73 and win the boys' division of the Nike Golf Junior at Quad Cities by two shots.
Hoffmann's 5-under 211 total was enough to hold off Minghao Wang, who shot a final round-low 70. The duo was tied briefly on the back nine, but Wang bogeyed No. 17 and two groups later, Hoffmann hit a pitching wedge from 115 yards to 2 inches for a tap-in birdie. A par on No. 18 gave him the victory.
In the girls' division, Brianna Do shot a final-round 73 to finish at 3-under 213, giving the 14-year-old her first AJGA title.
Do held an eight-shot lead entering the final round, and ended up winning by 10. Taylore Karle shot a final-round 71 to finish second. Mindy Kim and Tia Gannon tied for third.

Event: SJGT Huntsville Junior Invitational
Course: Huntsville Country Club
When: June 7-8
Where: Huntsville, Ala.
Winners: Harris English, Moultrie, Ga. (65-70--135)/Staci Lynch, Clarksville, Tenn. (75-73--148)
Runners-up: Benjamin Kishigian (69-69--138)/Brooke Pancake (73-75--148)
Skinny: Harris English is not quite 15 years old, but he outplayed his Huntsville Junior Invitational competitors whose ages ranged up to 18. Shooting rounds of 65 and 70, English made a move from being ranked No. 134 to No. 89. Finishing second was 17-year-old Benjamin Kishigian, who fell short by three shots.
In the girls' division, Staci Lynch, 16, finished on top, although at the beginning, it didn't appear that the final score would be in her favor. In the first round, Christina Wentworth and Brook Pancake shared the lead, at 73, while Lynch fell behind with 75. However, in Round 2, Lynch came back with 73 for 148, which tied her with Pancake. A playoff was needed to determine the champion where Lynch won with a par.

BALDRY: WIE'S 'WOW FACTOR'
FALLS TO WAYSIDE FOR LANG

Every player succumbs to the ''wow factor'' at some point. While sizing the competition lined down the practice range, golfers can't help but turn their heads to see what makes a prodigy tick.

For Brittany Lang, that prodigy was her Curtis Cup teammate, Michelle Wie.

Over the years, Lang has gained plenty of attention in her own right. Although she's only a year removed from junior competition, Lang's already made her mark in the college and amateur scene. But the no-frills Texan isn't satisfied. She's eager to make her debut in the professional arena, where 14-year-old Wie is already somewhat of a veteran.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Since his convincing victory at last year's U.S. Junior Brian Harman's resume reads like a champion trying to convince the world he can do better. Since that warm day last July at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md., Harman won the AJGA's Polo Golf Junior, tied for third at MCI Junior, sixth at the Bobby Chapman Invitational and 10th at the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior.

In between he finished the last season No. 1 the Golfweek/Titleist rankings and has remained in that lofty perch so far this season. For all his accomplishments, however, at a recent U.S. Open sectional qualifier Harman lamented his play of late, particularly his putting.

''I've just been shooting too many 74s and 75s and that's been putting me out of things,'' Harman said June 8 at the qualifier at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

At Lake Nona, Harman carded rounds of 71-74 and missed advancing to the Shinnecock Hills primarily, he said, because of poor putting. He tested a new Scotty Cameron by Titleist Red X model before his Open qualifier but returned to his normal putter, a Cameron Studio model, when play began.

* Teen-agers In-Bee Park and Brittany Lincicome secured spots in the U.S. Women's Open June 15 in sectional qualifying.

Park, a 15-year-old from Eustis, and Lincicome, 18 from Seminole, shared medal honors at The Country Club at Heathrow, finishing 36 holes at 1-over 145.

Estill made a 9-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Maru Martinez and claim the fifth and final qualifying spot for the Open on July 1-4 at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

* Eddie Olson scored a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. The 1 guided him to a California state high school championship June 9 at Santa Maria Country Club. Olson, who is self-taught, then played the 17th and 18th near perfect -- fairways, greens and pars. He finished with a 4-under-par 68 at the 6,505-yard layout.

Santa Maria head pro Ken White had Olson autograph a ball to keep on display at the club. Olson had the hole-in-one ball in his pocket when he left the club.

*Short shots: TaylorMade-Adidas Golf has agreed to become the presenting sponsor of the Western Amateur and Western Junior the Western Golf Association announced. The three-year agreement begins with this year's Western Amateur and Western Junior and runs through 2006. . . . The SJGT Championship field will be selected after the TPC of Tampa and Greystone events June 22-23. . . . Be sure to call the golf course where you plan to attempt to qualify for the U.S. Junior or U.S. Girls' Junior championships. Each site will be able to keep you informed of tee times and practice rounds. . . . . Andrew Landry of Groves, Texas, and Shannon Fish of Spring, Texas, won the boys' and girls' divisions of the 2004 Westfield STPGA Junior Championship. With the victory, Landry and Fish qualified for the national Westfield Junior PGA Championship July 14-17 at Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio. . . . . RECRUITING CENTRAL
There are more than 300 intercollegiate golf programs for men and women at two-year colleges, and the American Association of Community Colleges publishes the following statistics that should be of interest to many college-bound golfers.

Forty-five percent of all first-time college freshmen begin their studies at two-year schools, and one-third of those students receive some form of financial aid. The average total tuition and fees at two-year schools is approximately $1,500 per year.

Additionally, the AACC reports that, ''Community college students learn in relatively small classes from instructors whose primary responsibility is teaching, not research, resulting in high student-teacher contact time. Adjunct professors, or part-time faculty members, have long been part of community college staffs for reasons beyond economics. People are typically hired for adjunct positions because they possess technical skills and knowledge that are beneficial to students. Their expertise and workplace experiences help keep curricula fresh.''

A community college may be the ideal place for many students to begin their higher education.
