TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: AJGA FootJoy Boys Invitational

Course: Forest Oaks CC

When: June 16-19

Where: Greensboro, N.C.

Winner: Brian Harman, Savannah, Ga. (68-70-74-70--282)

Runners-up: Ben Spickard, Roswell, Ga. (75-70-68-70--283), Philip Francis, Scottsdale, Ariz. (73-69-71-70--283), Jon McLean, Weston, Fla. (69-70-71-73--283)

Skinny: Defending champion Brian Harman retained his title in dramatic fashion by holing a 50-foot putt on the 72nd hole of the FootJoy Boys Invitational June 18 to finish at 6-under 282, one better than a trio tied at 283.

Harman, who carded a final-round, 2-under 70, made birdie on the final hole to win by one shot over Philip Francis, Jon McLean, and Ben Spickard. Harman had not played the 18th hole well in the previous three rounds, recording bogey, double bogey, bogey.

''The last three holes killed me all week, especially No. 18, and I knew that I had to make at least par to have a chance at a playoff,'' said Harman, No. 1 in the Golfweekf/Titleist Junior Rankings. ''On every putt I hit I'm trying to make it, and right before I hit it, I thought to myself that crazier things have happened.''

Event: Rolex Girls Junior Championship

Course: LPGA International (Champions Course)

When: June 15-17

Where: Daytona Beach, Fla.

Winner: Julieta Granada, Asuncion, Paraguay (68-69-64--201)

Runners-up: Morgan Pressel, Boca Raton, Fla. (70-72-68--210), Brittany Lincicome, Seminole, Fla. (71-74-65--210)

Skinny: Racking up a personal-low competitive round and her first major victory, Julieta Granada, 17, finished at 15-under 201 June 17 to win the Rolex Girls Junior Championship. In doing so, Granada shattered the tournament-low 18- and 54-hole scoring records, previously held by Aree Song at 67 and 206, respectively.

In second place at 6-under 210 were Brittany Lincicome, 18, and Morgan Pressel, 16.
Granada entered the final round at 7 under after rounds of 68 and 69. Following her second round, however, Granada was disappointed by her short game. Despite fatigue, she spent extra time on the putting green in preparation for the final round and managed to fix the glitches.

''I was making putts from the start,'' she said of her final-round 64, in which she made eight birdies.

Winning a junior major had been Granada's goal for the summer. ''Now that I've accomplished that -- let's make it another,'' she said.

This week, Granada is attempting to reach another milestone in her career when she participates in the second stage of qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open.

Gobis, who will play college golf at Wisconsin-Green Bay, shot a closing-round 70 that included three birdies and a 12-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 15th hole.

''I knew I could play with these guys, and just kept trying to hit the fairway and get the ball on the green,'' Gobis said. ''The putter got hot, and it feels great to win and gain confidence for my next tournament.''

Ryan Linton of Lake Forest, Ill., Charlie Hendrickson of Columbus, Ohio, and Cashel Rosier of Grand Ledge, Mich., finished in a three-way tie for second at even-par 213.

Jennifer Hong of Windermere, Fla., proved patience is a virtue by earning her first AJGA title in 17 tries. Hong entered the round three strokes behind Lindsey Bergeon of Sarasota, Fla., but closed the gap quickly as she gained the lead by the end of her second hole and won the title with a 5-over 218 total.

Baldry: Creamer's LPGA
title run was untelevised,
overlooked, yet outstanding

Millions tuned in to watch last week's showdown at Shinnecock Hills. But not one person witnessed the LPGA's dramatic conclusion from the living room sofa.

Pity.

An untelevised, unheralded ShopRite LPGA Classic convened four hours from the Southampton madness. And a 17-year-old nearly stole the overshadowed show.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Fresh off of her title run at the LPGA's ShopRite Classic, Paula Creamer, 17, of Pleasanton, Calif., carded rounds of 68 and 73 on June 21 to earn a spot in next month's U.S. Women's Open.

Creamer, a rising high school senior and the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, had finished in a tie for second a day earlier in the ShopRite LPGA Classic, held in neighboring Galloway Township.

''Mentally, I was tired after everything that went on over the weekend,'' she said. ''I was really hoping to win (Sunday) so I wouldn't have to come out here today.''

Had she won at the ShopRite, Creamer would have claimed a spot in the Open without qualifying.

Seventy-one players amateurs and professionals competed in the 36-hole qualifier, vying for 24 spots in the Open, scheduled July 1-4 in South Hadley, Mass. Megan Grehan, 15, of Mamaroneck, N.Y., was the only other amateur to advance from the 6,400-yard course at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
Here are some recruiting reminders for the upcoming 2004-05 year. The NCAA allows high-school seniors to accept expense-paid, official recruiting visits to college campuses beginning on the opening day of classes of the senior year. In Divisions I and II, prospects are limited to five official visits, and only one paid visit per institution.

NCAA Division III schools also are allowed one expense-paid visit per campus. However, there is no limit on the number of paid visits if initial enrollment is at a Division III college.

The NAIA has no limit on the number of recruiting visits a prospect may make.
