TOURNAMENT RECAPS
Event: Dunlop Carolina Junior Championship
Course: Green Valley CC
When: June 21-24
Where: Greenville, S.C.
Winners: Paul Haley, Dallas (68-65-69--202)/Catherina Wang, Orlando, Fla. (69-73-73--215)
Runners-up: Mu Hu, Celebration, Fla. (72-70-68--210)/Christina Wentworth, Macon, Ga. (74-77-76--227), Hannah Brabb, Maitland, Fla. (74-75-78--227)
Skinny: Paul Haley shot a final-round 3-under 69 to win his first AJGA title. His three-round, 14-under 202 total was good for an eight-shot victory. Haley entered the final round with a four-stroke lead over Nicholas Smith. After three holes, Smith had cut that lead in half. However, on No. 5, Haley shut the door. His approach shot into the par-4 fifth hole landed 5 feet away and he made the birdie putt. ''The iron shot and birdie putt on No. 5 was the turning point of my round,'' said Haley, who followed with birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Previously, Haley's best AJGA finish was a third-place tie at this year's TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Junior at The Woodlands. Mu Hu shot a low-final-round, 4-under 68, totaling 210 for the tournament and finishing second. In similar fashion, Catherina Wang dominated the field and the course as she won the girls' division by 12 strokes. Wang, the only girl in the field to finish under par (1 under), has won twice in her last three starts, including an eight-stroke victory two weeks ago at the Ringgold Telephone Co. Junior Championship. ''I played pretty well this week,'' Wang said. ''I stayed in the fairway all week, which is very key, and I made putts when I needed too. I'm very happy to win this event with such good players.'' Finishing in a tie for second at 227 were, Hannah Brabb and Christina Wentworth.
Event: Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana
Course: TPC of Louisiana
When: June 21-24
Where: New Orleans
Winners: Matt Fast, Hattiesburg, Miss. (74-70-68--212)/Caney Hines, San Antonio (73-76-73--222)
Runners-up: Thomas Hugghins, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (73-74-73--220)/Christie Reed, Oak Ridge, Tenn. (72-73-77--222)
Skinny: Matt Fast shot the low round of the tournament June 24 with a 4-under 68 to win the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana. Entering the final round at even par, Fast said he ''got off to a good start.'' After a par at No. 1, Fast made a 5-foot birdie at No. 2. ''I was hitting it pretty close,'' he said. ''And I putted well from 10 feet in.'' On the 465-yard, par-4 fourth, Fast carded an eagle that took him to 3 under for the tournament. ''I holed out from 150 yards,'' said Fast, who claimed his first AJGA title a week after winning the Cleveland Golf Joe Durant Southern Junior in Pensacola, Fla. Thomas Hugghins finished second at 220, eight strokes behind. Kyle Kelley, Morgan Landry and Weldon Martin tied for third at 221. In a two-hole, sudden-death playoff, Caney Hines scrambled to defeat Christie Reed to win the girls' division title. Both tied at 222. On the first playoff hole (No. 10), Hines had a rocky start, placing her tee shot in a fairway bunker, while Reed hit the fairway. However, Hines knocked her approach to 10 feet. ''I didn't think I was going to make it over the lip of the bunker,'' she said. ''I just hit it as hard as I could.'' Both made par and continued the playoff on the 495-yard, par-5 11th. With Reed in the fairway, Hines found herself behind a Cyprus tree on the left side. Hines scrambled again, punching her second shot around the tree to 10 feet of the hole. Hines two-putted for par, and Reed's par putt lipped-out. ''It's tough to win that way,'' said Hines of her second AJGA victory. ''I watched that happen to Christie all day.''
Event: Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship
Course: Angel Park GC (Mountain Course)
When: June 22-24
Where: Las Vegas
Winners: Daniel Lim, Gilroy, Calif. (67-66-70--203)/Tiffany Joh, San Diego (69-72-69--210)
Runners-up: Rory Hie, Lakewood, Calif. (69-70-67--206), Kenny Kim, Carritos, Calif. (71-70-65--206)/Jane Chin, Huntington Beach, Calif. (68-72-76--216)
Skinny: Daniel Lim, 17, took home the Las Vegas Founders Junior title June 24. Lim, who shot 67-66-70 for a 10-under 203 total, won by three shots over Rory Hie and Kenny Kim. Lim, who led all three days, set a goal of 14 under before the event started.
''I didn't finish as well as I could have, but a win's still a win,'' he said. After trailing Jane Chin by one stroke after Round 1, Tiffany Joh, 17, pushed ahead and carded two birdies in a final-round, 2-under 69. Last year, Joh placed second in Las Vegas. This year, she said she was glad to finally win. ''I've had a bunch of second places, so I feel like a big weight has been lifted,'' she said. Chin was second at 216. Tied for third at 226 were Brooke Schneider and Kendra Little.
Event: Nike Golf Junior at Las Cruces
Course: Picacho Hills CC
When: June 21-24
Where: Las Cruces. N.M.
Winner: Richard Lee, Vancouver, British Columbia, (69-68-66--203)/Taylore Karle, Scottsdale Ariz. (71-72-70--213)
Runners-up: Tommy Chung Hao Mou, Bradenton Fla. (74-74-70--218)/Wonjoo Choi, Murrieta, Calif. (77-73-77--227)
Skinny: There were only three rounds of sub-70 at the Nike Golf Junior at Las Cruces and they all belonged to Richard Lee. Lee's remarkable feat gave him a 13-under 203 total and 15-shot victory. ''It feels good to win,'' he said. ''I just played it simple and safe. Putting was key. I made a lot of putts.'' His next closest competitor was Tommy Chung Hao Mou who shot 74-74-70. Not only did Lee outperform 65 of the nation's top juniors, he also set an AJGA record with his 15-stroke victory. In the girls' division, Taylore Karle outplayed 79 others to take title. Finishing second at 227 was Wonjoo Choi.
Event: Signal Mountain Junior Invitational
Course: Signal Mountain CC
When: June 22-24
Where: Signal Mountain, Tenn.
Winners: Peter Malnati, Dandridge, Tenn. (70-66-69--205)/Whitney Neuhauser, Charlottesville, Va. (73-72-82--227)
Runners-up: Robert Gates, Gainesville, Fla. (68-69-70--207)/Stacie Lynch (76-81-76--233)
Skinny: Robert Gates wouldn't go down easily in his quest for a third consecutive Signal Mountain Junior Invitational. Peter Malnati made sure he went down, nonetheless. Malnati opened a three-stroke lead on the back nine at Signal Mountain Country Club and held on to beat Gates by two strokes, shooting 8-under 205. ''Of course Gates wouldn't go down without a fight. I knew he wouldn't,'' Malnati told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. ''I gave him a couple of chances to put me away, but he was kind to me.'' Down two strokes with one hole to play, Gates -- a Texas A&M signee -- hit driver-wedge to 3 feet. Once Malnati safely cut a 9-iron to the center of the green on his approach, he needed only to two-putt, but rolled his first attempt more than 4 feet past and Malnati holed his birdie attempt. Whitney Neuhauser didn't have to make anything to secure her victory. Going into the final round with an 11-stroke lead, all she needed was a closing 82 to take the title by six strokes over Staci Lynch (233). ''It was not fun today,'' Neuhauser said. ''The win feels great, though. Every time I'd have a good streak of pars, I'd have a huge-number hole.''
Event: Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series
Course: Eaglesticks GC
When: June 21-22
Where: Zanesville, Ohio
Winners: Brendan Madden, Jefferson Hills, Pa. (75-73--148)/Laura Ormson, Granger, Ind. (75-71--146)
Runners-up: Gina Besozzi, Columbus, Ohio (78-76--154)/Travis Seagert, Sandusky, Ohio (75-75--150), Matt Hancock, Princeton, Ind. (77-73--150)
Skinny: Brendan Madden, 17, came from behind to claim his first PGA Junior Series title after turning in a 73 for a 148 total. His round began relatively smooth with two pars, followed by a birdie at No. 3 and four more pars. He bogeyed No. 8 to return to even par. The back nine was more of a rollercoaster, as Madden recorded one birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey on Nos. 10 through 17. With pressure mounting, Madden collected himself and recorded an eagle on the final hole to seal the victory. ''Besides my double bogey I played solid golf today,'' Madden said. ''I tried not to think about what was going on with the guys behind me, which helped my play. I know if I just stuck with my game and tried to score around par I would do good.'' Tied for second were Travis Seagert, 16, and Matt Hancock, 16, at 150. Laura Ormson captured her second consecutive PGA Junior Series title with a 146 total. Ormson finished eight shots better than Gina Besozzi (154).

NEWS AND NOTES
* The United States posted an even-par final round to hold off South Africa and capture the 2004 Toyota World Junior Golf Cup June 25. The title was the U.S.'s first since 2000 and sixth overall. South Africa's Matthew Kent finished at 18-under 270 to win the individual title by seven shots over Spain's Pablo Martin Benavides. The United States led after each round and finished at 25-under 839 -- a World Junior record. South Africa placed second at 842. ''I'm proud of the way these men played today,'' said U.S. coach Mike Ketcham. ''These weren't ideal conditions with the rain and they could have let things get away from them after 13 and 14 but they hung in there and made tough shots.'' Spain placed third at 845, followed by South Korea 849, Canada 852, Argentina 857, Japan 859 and Austria 860. Kent's mark of 18 under also set the World Junior Golf Cup individual record.
* Morgan Pressel, 16, became the youngest champion in the 102-year-old history of the North and South Women's Amateur June 28 when she defeated Lisa Ferrero, 1 up. In her first appearance at the championship held at Pinehurst No. 2, Pressel came from behind in the last five holes to win at the last. In the morning round, rain and gusty winds were present for the majority of the match. Ferrero, a senior at the University of Texas, won the first hole, but Pressel quickly answered on the second and held a 1-up lead going into lunch. The weather cleared for the final 18 holes and Ferrero, a Lodi, Calif., resident, squared the match on the 20th hole with a par. The two exchanged 1-up leads for the next 15 holes and entered the 36th all square. Ferrero's approach sailed over the 18th green, while Pressel's landed 30 feet below the hole. After Ferrero's chip shot skidded 8 feet past, Pressel left herself a testy 4-footer for par. Ferrero failed to connect her par putt, but Pressel found the bottom of the cup to secure the title.
* Reigning U.S. Junior champion Brian Harman, and top-ranked junior, had rounds of 69-69-68-69 to finish tied for fifth at the Northeast Amateur June 28. Harman was the only player in the elite field to shoot par (69) or better every day. Jon Curran and Webb Simpson tied for 10th.
* Tournament officials for the John Q. Hammons Hotel Classic announced that Paula Creamer, the top-ranked junior, has accepted a sponsor exemption into the event. Creamer will compete Sept. 10-12 alongside 142 LPGA professionals at the site of the 1983 U.S. Women's Open, Cedar Ridge Country Club.
* The IJGT announced members of Team USA for the 2004 Mizuno North America Cup, scheduled July 6-9 at Berkeley Hall in Bluffton, S.C. Members of Team USA:
* Short shot: The deadline for the 83rd Women's Texas Golf Association's State Amateur is July 5. The championship will be played July 23-30 at BlackHorse Golf Club in Cypress. For more information, visit www.womenstexasgolf.org.

Prospective student-athletes should tailor their resumes to the schools they are writing. Academic prowess and leadership skills may be as important as golf scores in applying to an Ivy League school. A conversation this week with a coach from a top-20 NCAA Division I men's program revealed that he has no interest in receiving scores from a potential student-athlete's 18-hole tournaments. This coach is looking for scores and performance patterns from 36- or 54-hole events at high levels of competition. He or she wants to know if a player can bounce back from a bad round or how they play after having to sleep overnight with the tournament lead. Compare that with coaches at some NCAA Division III programs who are just hoping to recruit a player who can occasionally break 80. The message to junior golfers is to know where and why they are sending information and what the expectations might be at different competitive levels. A resume that does not fit the program quickly may end up in the recycling bin having been a waste to the sender and the coach.
