LEVY: MIDSUMMER STUDY
If summer were a long par 4 we'd all be hitting our approach shots right about now. Yes, it's July and tournament season is well under way. So how's it going? Odds are some of you are basking in the enjoyment of great golf. Perhaps you're even relishing a hard-fought victory. Some of you also are probably wallowing in the frustration of poor play. Most likely fall somewhere in the middle.

NEWS AND NOTES
* Teen-age amateurs were all the rage at the U.S. Women's Open. Four made the cut, three made major noise. One led after the first round, two tied for 13th. Brittany Lincicome, Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer served notice that the future of women's golf has arrived. Lincicome, an 18-year-old from Seminole, Fla., shot 66 July 1 at The Orchards in South Hadley, Mass., and led after the first round, becoming the first amateur to lead after Day 1 since Cindy Hill in 1973. The 66 -- including five birdies, one eagle and two bogeys -- tied Carol Semple Thompson (1994) for low score by an amateur in the Open. Although Lincicome faltered with 77-76-78 to finish 55th, she closed with a birdie from 2 feet on the 72nd hole, her lone birdie of the final round.
* In-Bee Park and Brian Harman will lead the east squad at next month's Canon Cup while Trent Leon and Paula Creamer highlight the west team that will head to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The final standings were published last week with the top 8 boys and top 8 girls from each region earning automatic invitations to the Ryder Cup-style matches which will be played Aug. 2-5. Each team will be finalized with captains' picks (two boys, two girls) July 12 following the Rolex Tournament of Champions.
* Short shots: Kyle Kelley led qualifying for the World Junior Cup June 30 at Disney Resort's Magnolia Course. Kelley won the boys 15-18 division with a 139 total, three shots ahead of Billy Belair. In the girls 15-18 division, Selanee Henderson took medalist honors with rounds of 75-74. The World Junior Cup will be played Aug. 9-13 in Scotland. . . . Jacqui Concolino of Orlando shot 74-69--143 to take home top honors June 30 at the Florida Junior Girls' Championship. Concolino -- who won the 12-14 year old division in 2002 and came in fourth overall in 2003
