TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions
Course: Sunriver Resort/Crosswater Course
When: July 6-9
Where: Sunriver, Ore.
Winner: Jamie Lovemark (70-70-67-69--276)/Morgan Pressel (73-72-74-67--286)
Runners-up: Jarred Texter (76-69-70-67--282)/Angela Park (73-76-76-64--289)
Skinny: Jamie Lovemark of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., posted a final-round 3-under 69 July 9 and broke away from a closely packed leaderboard to win the Rolex Tournament of Champions by six shots over Jarred Texter of Millersville, Pa.
Lovemark entered the final round six shots clear of second. However, Texter shot 5 under on the front nine to close the gap to three. Lovemark responded with three birdies on Nos. 10-13 to pull away from the field -- at one point leading by as many as seven -- and cruised to his first AJGA title. He finished at 12-under 276. Texter finished with 67 and placed second at 282.
''I wasn't sure what to expect,'' Lovemark said. ''I've never really been in this situation before. It's my first national win and for it to come at Rolex is a great honor.''
Erik Flores of Grass Valley, Calif., and David May of Auburn, N.Y., tied for third at 283. Nicholas Smith of Ocala, Fla., and Kevin Schultz of Richardson, Texas, tied for fifth at 284.
Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., overcame a four-shot deficit by shooting 5-under 67 to win by three shots over Angela Park of Torrance, Calif. The victory was her sixth American Junior Golf Association title.
Pressel, who finished at 2-under 286, posted three birdies on the front nine and three consecutive birdies on the back nine and went on to win by three shots.
Park had a record-breaking final round, which included five consecutive birdies on the front nine. Her 8-under-par 64 broke the competitive course record by three shots and the Rolex Tournament of Champions record by two. Paraguay's Julieta Granada shot a final-round 68 to finish six shots back in third.

Event: AJGA Ping Harvey Penick Junior
Course:Austin Country Club
When: July 6-8
Where: Austin, Texas
Winners: Lance Lopez (68-70-80--218)/Michaela Cavener (70-70-76--216)
Runners-up: Jeff Gerlich (74-73-71--218)/Kimberly Meck (68-77-76--221)
Skinny: It took Lance Lopez of Missouri City, Texas, four extra holes, but he did what he needed to do to earn the boys' division title at the PING Harvey Penick Junior. Lopez, a Rolex Junior All-American, took a seven-stroke lead into the final round but made the turn at 7-over-par for the day and two strokes behind San Antonio's Will Griffin.
Lopez and Griffin were neck-in-neck on the back nine. On the 510-yard, par-5 17th, Lopez, who was four shots back, hit his second shot to 40 feet and two-putted for birdie. Griffin stood on the 18th tee with a two-shot lead. After taking a drop from an unplayable lie, Griffin hit his third shot into the water in front of the green and Lopez made par to finish the tournament at 218, one shot better than Griffin. Jeff Gerlich of Austin, Texas, playing in the group ahead, posted a 1-under 71 to also sit at 218.
After pars on the first three playoff holes, Lopez made a birdie on the fourth extra hole for the win.
''I just kept my focus and when I hit a bad shot, I followed it up with a good one to get my confidence back,'' Lopez, 16, said. ''It was all about confidence today.
In the girls' division, Michaela Cavener of Tulsa, Okla., saved her best tournament for last as she captured her first AJGA title in her last event before she begins college. Cavener won with a three-day total of even-par 216.

Event: AJGA Hargray Junior Classic
Course: Palmetto Hall Plantation, Robert Cupp Course
When: July 7-9
Where: Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Winners: Kyle Stanley (71-72-77--220)/Kristin Wetzel (74-75-73--222)
Runners-up: Daniel Burns (73-74-75--222), Cameron Knight (74-71-77--222)/Laura Crawford (74-72-76--222)
Skinny: Down one stroke heading to No. 18, Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Kristin Wetzel of Middletown, N.Y., could only hope for something big to happen. After a hazardous triple bogey in the boys' division and a grueling three-hole girls' division playoff, both Stanley and Wetzel were crowned Hargray Junior Classic champions. Stanley finished with a final-round 77 and a two-stroke victory. With a 73, the low final-round girls' division score, Wetzel came from behind to win in her first AJGA event.
After leading for a majority of the tournament, Stanley's advantage disappeared on the back-nine after a bogey on No. 11, which opened the door for Cameron Knight of Dade City, Fla. A birdie on No. 16 pushed Knight into the lead. After both players made par on No. 17, Knight was in the driver's seat with a one-shot advantage heading into the final hole.
After failing to find reprieve from the water, Knight ended up taking relief anyway. Stanley two-putted for par and the victory.
No. 18 was even more eventful in the girls' division, as Laura Crawford of Lancaster, S.C., and Jacqui Concolino of Orlando, Fla., headed to the final hole at 5-over-par with a one-stroke advantage over Wetzel. But Wetzel was the only one of the three to hit the green in regulation.
Wetzel made her par for a final-round 73 and a 222 tournament total. Concolino chipped on and three-putted for a triple-bogey 7. She ended with a tournament total of 223, one shot behind Wetzel and Crawford, who made bogey to head to a playoff. On the third playoff hole, the 169-yard, par-3, Wetzel capitalized on another opportunity.

Event: AJGA Midwest Junior Championship
Course: Rich Harvest Links
When: July 7-9
Where: Sugar Grove, Ill.
Winners: Kyle Davis (71-71--142)/Jennie Arseneault (81-73-75--229)
Runners-up: Jeff Kaiser (73-72--145)/Carly Truitt (78-74-78--230)
Skinny: Amid afternoon thundershowers and a two-hour rain delay, Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, Iowa, shot a final-round 1-over 75 to earn her first AJGA victory at the Midwest Junior Championship at Rich Harvest Links. Second-round leader Kyle Davis was declared the winner of the boys' division, after heavy rain forced the final round to be canceled. His 2-under 142 total, made him the only competitor in the field to finish under par.
Entering the final round, Arseneault trailed Carly Truitt of Marysville, Ohio, by two strokes. After the rain delay and a slow start by Arseneault, including a double bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 4, Truitt's lead grew to four. Arseneault made birdies on the par-3 seventh and par-5 eighth. After a par on No. 9, coupled with a bogey by Truitt, Arseneault had her first lead.
Arseneault pulled away with consecutive birdies on Nos. 13-15. Truitt made the final hole interesting knocking her second shot to 10 feet for birdie. Nevertheless, Arseneault was able to save a bogey after hitting into the greenside bunker. Her tournament total of 7-over-par, 229 was good enough to capture the victory. Her previous best AJGA finish was at the 2004 Nike Golf Junior at South Padre Island where she finished second.
In the boys' division, heavy rains and threatening weather conditions forced the cancellation of the final round. First place was awarded to second-round leader Davis of Kennett Square, Pa.

Event: AJGA True Temper Junior Open
Course: Diablo Grande, Ranch Course
When: July 6-8
Where: Patterson, Calif.
Winners: Bio Kim (73-68-72--213)/Sooji Cho (74-68-73--215)
Runners-up: Mathew Tom (73-71-72--216)/Grace Woo (70-74-75--219)
Skinny: Bio Kim was thankful after he sunk his par putt on No. 18 and finished the final round with an even-par 72, claiming his first AJGA victory at the True Temper Junior Open. Sooji Cho was able to maintain her lead and claim her first title with a tournament total of 1-under 215.
Kim, 13, of Tustin, Calif., said his family was his main support system throughout the rounds.
''My dad told me not to stress and just to play my own game,'' he said. ''I'm very thankful for them because they helped me stay grounded.''
Kim birdied his first hole and continued through the front nine with three additional birdies. He sealed victory on the back nine when he shot 37 and ended the tournament with a three-stroke advantage.
Another first of the day came for Cho, 16, of Glendale, Calif., when she shot a final-round 1-over 73 to claim her first AJGA title.
At the beginning of her round, Cho started out by shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine. When she reached the par-5 16th hole, she said she hooked her drive in a hazard and hit a 5-wood out. She was able to chip in for birdie, which marked her first birdie of the day. She was able to card another birdie on No. 18.
Grace Woo of Burbank, Calif., finished second with a 3-over-par 219. In third with a 9-over 225 was Christy Yun of University Place, Wash.

Event: Press Thornton Future Masters
Course: Dothan Country Club
When: July 8-10
Where: Dothan, Ala.
Winner: Hudson Swafford (70-64-68--202)
Runner-up: Matt Fast (69-71-68--208)
Skinny: If there was ever any doubt about Hudson Swafford's resolve to win the 55th Press Thornton Future Masters, it came on the third hole of Saturday's final round.
A triple bogey on the water-guarded par-3 saw Swafford's lead shrink to two shots over a hard-charging Mark Silvers of Savannah, Ga.
Swafford of Tallahassee, Fla., played the final 15 holes in 4 under, settling for a final-round 2-under 68, and what turned out to be a six-shot victory at the Dothan Country Club.
A three-day total of 10-under-par 202 saw Swafford finish six-shots ahead of Matt Fast of Hattiesburg, Miss., who shot a final-round 68 to finish at 4-under 208. Todd Heinz of Collierville, Tenn., who had the best round of the day at 66, finished at 3-under 209.

Event: Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series
Course: Eisenhower GC at The U.S. Air Force Academy
When: July 6-8
Where: Colorado Springs, Colo.
Winners: David Cosel (68-72-77--217)/Emily Powers (78-72-79--229)
Runners-up: Alex Kephart (74-75-74--223), Katie Kempter (81-77-78--236)
Skinny: David Cosel, 17, of nearby Monument, Colo., completed his wire-to-wire run in the boys' 16-17 division after turning in 77 for a 217 total. Cosel opened play with consistency, parring the first seven holes. He slipped with a bogey on eight, but countered with a birdie on nine to make the turn at even. The back nine saw him struggle with three bogeys and a double bogey for a 5-over-par 41 to close out his first Junior Series championship.
''I actually played a lot better today, I just couldn't get the ball in the hole,'' Cosel said. ''This is my second national tournament win of the year, so it feels really good to get the win. I was pretty conservative with my round today. There were some tough pins out there and hard to get at, but I knew I just needed to stick with the same game plan I had the past two rounds.''
Finishing second was Alex Kephart, 17, of Colorado Springs. Kephart shot 74 for a total of 223, while Brett Iliff, 17, of Leawood, Kan., took third with 77-226.
Emily Powers of Quincy, Ill., claimed her second Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series title of the summer in the girls' 16-17 division and eighth overall after shooting 79 for a three-day total of 229. This also marks the second consecutive year Powers has claimed a Junior Series event at Eisenhower Golf Club.
Powers, 16, struggled to match her second-round 72, but was never seriously threatened.
She opened play on the front nine with four consecutive pars, but struggled on the next five holes with two bogeys and a double bogey to make the turn at 4 over. Her back nine was improved by one stroke with a 39 that included a bogey and double bogey.

Elliott: Season heating up
just in time for U.S. Juniors

After covering the junior golf scene for four years, I would have to say there hasn't been a better time to be involved than right now. Whether you are a player, parent, coach, tournament official or just a fan, junior golf is hotter today than it ever has been.

Juniors are competing successfully at the game's highest levels. They are garnering invitations into top professional and amateur events and more and more players are getting recruited to play college golf.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
In the introduction of the ''PING American College Golf Guide,'' the author writes a few sentences about the highly selective freshman admissions at some North Carolina universities. The intent is to encourage readers to consider academic qualifications as well as athletic talent when seeking possible college matches for prospective student-athletes.

Let us review profiles of recent freshman classes at these academically-selective institutions.

* At University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, incoming freshmen had an average SAT score of 1250 and a 4.1 average high-school GPA. In-state students were given admission preference and comprised 82 percent of the class.

* At North Carolina State University, in-state applicants also received admission preference, and only 10 percent of the new class was from out of state. The average SAT score was approximately 1195, and the average high-school GPA was 4.05.

* At Duke University, a private institution, the average SAT score for new freshmen was 1440. The average score for admitted applicants submitting the ACT was 31. GPA averages were not released.

* At Wake Forest University, also a private school, the average SAT score was approximately 1320 for the 1,000 freshmen, 65 percent of whom graduated in the top-10 percent of their high school class. A total of 5,700 students applied to Wake Forest that year.

This type of information should be given strong consideration by prospects when deciding what schools to contact. High school players wanting positive responses from college coaches should send their letters and resumes to schools where their golf scores and academics are a good fit.

The next edition of the PING Guide will be online and will include more academic information on the colleges and universities who sponsor intercollegiate golf teams.
