TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: 87th Western Junior Championship
Course: Denver (Colo.) CC
When: July 13-16
Winner: Jamie Lovemark, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (70-67-71-65--273)
Runner-up: Philip Francis, Scottsdale, Ariz. (75-68-68-69--280)
Skinny: Jamie Lovemark started the final round July 16 of the Western Junior with a three-shot lead, and he didn't wait to see if anyone would mount a challenge.
He birdied four of the first six holes on his way to a record-tying, 6-under-par 65 to claim the 87th Western Junior Championship with a 273 total. Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz., finished seven shots back at 280.
The victory marked Lovemark's second national junior title this summer. He won the AJGA's Rolex Tournament of Champions July 9 in Sunriver, Ore.
''I've accomplished a lot this week. I never had a national championship before these two,'' said Lovemark, 16, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. ''I have tons of goals. I try to bring my best, and I guess this is my best. I'll take it.''
Lovemark, No. 5 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, tied a Denver Country Club competitive course record set in 1980.

Event: AJGA First American Title Avila Junior
Course: Avila G&CC
When: July 12-15
Where: Tampa, Fla.
Winner: Lion Kim (69-72-73--214)/Dolores White (71-74-75--220)
Runners-up: Justin Jones (76-72-70--218/Jessica Yadloczky (77-75-76--228) and Jacqui Concolino (74-73-81--228)
Skinny: Though Lion Kim, had two third-place and one second-place AJGA finishes, the Lake Mary, Fla., native took home his first AJGA victory after shooting a final-round 73 for a 214 tournament total at the First American Title Avila Junior.
Though heading into the final round of the boys' division down one stroke, Kim won by four shots over Justin Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., who shot a final-round 70 for 218. Kim, who solidified his victory after making eagle on par-5 No. 16, said, ''I knew right after I made my eagle putt that I had a good size lead. . . If I could just make par on Nos. 17 and 18, I knew I would have it. This win feels great; I just want to keep playing.''
Tyler Rucarean of Gainesville, Fla., and Cameron Knight of Dade City, Fla., tied for third at 221, followed by Raj Nahal of Longwood, Fla., who finished fourth at 222.
In the girls' division, Dolores White, with the support of her hometown crowd from nearby Lakeland, Fla., captured the title finishing with a tournament total of 71-74-75--220. White's eight-shot victory over her competitors marked her second AJGA triumph, and her first of 2004. ''On the back nine, Jacqui (Concolino) started to make a run, and it was scary,'' White said. ''When Jacqui gets it going, she doesn't stop. But when she uncharacteristically put one in the water on No. 16, I knew it was over.''
Concolino of Orlando, Fla., tied for second at 228 with Jessica Yadloczky of Cassleberry, Fla.

Event: Marshallia Ranch Junior
Course: Marshallia Ranch GC
When: July 12-15
Where: Vandenberg AFB, Calif.
Winners: Roberto Galletti Jr. (70-72-72--214)/Xyra Suyetsugu (75-73-75--223)
Runners-up: Doug Fortner (71-73-71--215)/Allison Goodman (74-73-79--226)
Skinny: Roberto Galletti Jr. of Clayton, Calif., posted a final-round 72 in the boys' division of the Marshaliia Ranch Golf Club, to earn his first AJGA victory. Although the back nine didn't seem too promising for Galletti, he was able to pull through. ''I was 5 up going into the back nine,'' he said.  ''Then I doubled No. 13, had a lost ball in a tree on No.15 and before I knew it, I was only 1 up.''
Finishing off his victory, Galletti made a 20-foot birdie on No. 18. ''It's such a relief to win my first AJGA event,'' he said. ''I played pretty consistent, and I hit it good all week long. All I had to do was worry about my game and not the other competitors because anything can happen.''
Finishing second at 215 was Doug Fortner of Tustin, Calif. Tim Cha of Chino Hills, Calif., came in third at 216, followed by Larry Wong of Diamond Bar, Calif., at 218.
Xyra Suyetsugu of Honolulu, Hawaii, also captured her first AJGA victory in her first AJGA event. Suyetsugu took the lead in the final round finishing with a 7-over-par 223 tournament total.
Excited about her victory, Suyetsugu said, ''It's a great feeling to win because I really didn't expect it. I didn't even realize I was in the lead. I was just playing my game, so it was a nice surprise at the end.''
Allison Goodman of San Diego, finished second at 226 , and Mariko Makabe of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., came in third at 227.

Event: Solutions Consulting Junior Classic
Course:Totteridge GC
When: July 12-15
Where: Greensburg, Pa.
Winners: Christopher Gold (74-75-72--221)/Laura Nochta (83-92-77--242)
Runners-up: Jamie Wallace (72-72-77--221)/Katie Trachok (83-78-82--243)
Skinny: After Christopher Gold of Haddonfield, N.J., and Jamie Wallace of Moorestown, N.J., shot matching tournament totals of 221, it came down to a sudden-death playoff. Gold won with a par on the second playoff hole.
''Jamie and I play against each other a lot,'' Gold said. ''He's a great player, so it is very exciting to come out with the win.'' Prior to this title, Gold's best AJGA finish was ninth place.
Finishing at third was Clayton Rotz of Chamberburg Pa., at 222, followed by a three-way fourth-place tie at 226 by Niskayuna, N.Y.'s Christopher Barach, Ji Ho Moon of Ellicott City, Md., William Miller of McMurray, Pa., and Mike VanSickle of Wexford Pa.
Laura Nochta, of Cortland, Ohio, who was playing in only her second AJGA tournament, finished first in the girls' division. Nochta made consecutive birdies on Nos. 5-8 leading to her final-round 77 for a tournament total of 242. ''I just stuck it close and made all of the putts on Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8,'' Nochta said. ''I knew that the back nine would be tough, so I tried to go as low as I could on the front nine. By going low on the front I knew that I could stay in the 70s and possibly be in contention.''
Nochta beat out second-round leader Katie Trachok of Pittsburgh, who finished at 243, and Jordan Craid of Connellsville, Pa., was third at 246.

Event: Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout
Course: The Dominion CC
When: July 12-15
Where: San Antonio
Winners: Josh Hedge (66-68-73--207)/Morgan Pressel (72-68-72--212)
Runners-up: Robby Ormand 74-67-70--211)/Caney Hines (74-78-76--228)
Skinny: Josh Hedge of Billings, Mont., was playing a game of ''follow the leader,'' as he entered the tournament's final round leading by six strokes, and he held onto his lead. In the final round, Hedge shot 73 for a 207 tournament total, shooting even-par 36 on the front nine and 1-over 37 on the back.
Hedge said, ''This was a very surprising victory, but the way I've been hitting it, I'm not surprised at how I scored. The first two days I played two of the better rounds I've ever played. I felt like I was rolling, the putter was really working, and it was just a lot of fun.
'' Shooting 2-under 70 and finishing second was Robby Ormand of Austin, Texas, whose tournament total was 5-under 211. K.T. Livingston of Midland, Texas, and Geoff Howard of San Antonio, tied for third at even-par 216
While Hedge's victory may have been a surprise, Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla. couldn't have been surprised with her seventh AJGA victory. Pressel tied the AJGA girls' division record for margin of victory with a 16-stroke triumph, after she shot a tournament total of 4-under-par 212.
''Today, I just tried to put the ball on the fairway and on the green,'' Pressel said. ''I actually ended up hitting only seven fairways, but I was able to score. I hope I can keep the ball rolling. My goal is to win every tournament I play in. I'm not making too many mistakes, and if I do, I try to handle them well and not make huge numbers.''
Finishing second at 228, was Caney Hines of San Antonio. Tamara Campbell of Lawton, Okla., placed third at 232.

But Woltman finished at 280, one better than Maurer. After winning, Woltman commented, ''On hole No. 10, I hit a good tee shot and made the putt from 20 feet. ELLIOTT: THIS 'DIESEL'
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'

San Francisco

Riley O'Neill is exactly why the U.S. Golf Association makes players qualify for their championships.

Nicknamed ''The Diesel'', like Shaquille O'Neal, whose only common link to the teen is that they share similar last names. O'Neill, 16, made his first U.S. Junior Amateur appearance July 19. And unlike his NBA namesake who recently bolted the L.A. Lakers for the Miami Heat, this O'Neill is perfectly content on the West Coast.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Brian Harman, arguably the nation's top college prospect in this year's recruiting pool, verbally committed July 14 to sign with the University of Georgia during this November's early signing period.

Harman, the 2003 U.S. Junior champion from Savannah, Ga., was sought after by most of the leading college programs and said he selected Georgia over Clemson and Oklahoma State.

* After 10 years serving as the David Leadbetter Golf Academy's front man, Gary Gilchrist resigned July 9 to take a similar position at the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Gilchrist, the Leadbetter Academy's director of golf and more recently Michelle Wie's high-profile mentor, said he decided it was time to leave the Bradenton, Fla.-based IMG academy about two weeks ago.

* Mari Chun was the first medalist to fall July 21 when Canadašs Stephanie Sherlock ousted the Hawaiian, 2 and 1, in the opening round at the U.S. Girls' Junior. But by the end of Wednesday, only Julieta Granada was left standing after In-Bee Park lost to Hsiao-Ching Lu in 22 holes.

Lu built a 4-up lead after seven holes and the 2002 champion couldn't build any momentum. With only six holes to play, Park still found herself down four holes after Lu carded a sizzling 31 on the front nine.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
Last week we addressed high academic admission standards at some universities, and the examples used were profiles of test score and GPA averages of incoming freshmen at those schools. Prospective student-athletes should note that at some institutions a coach may have influence in getting a prospect admitted. Thus the overall academic profile for admitted student-athletes could be lower than the reported averages for the entering class.

Prospective student-athletes not being recruited would not have the possibility of ''coach input'' with the admissions department, however, all freshmen in a given class, athletes and nonathletes, would be competing for grades with students described in profile averages.
