TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: 56th U.S. Girls' Junior
Course: Mira Vista GC
Where: Fort Worth, Texas
When: July 19-24
Winner: Julieta Granada
Runner-up: Paula Creamer
Skinny: From start to finish, Julieta Granada wanted it more.
The fiery competitor wanted to advance past the quarterfinals for the first time in five years. She wanted to then turn the tide on Paula Creamer, the academy contemporary who¹d ended her run at the U.S. Girls' Junior one year ago. And she wanted to prove to herself that she could come out on top against the nation's best.

Event: 57th U.S. Junior
Course: Olympic Club (Lake Course)
Where: San Francisco
When: July 1924
Winner: Sihwan Kim
Runner-up: David Chung
Skinny: Sihwan Kim, 15, of Fullerton, Calif., was happy that his long journey at the U.S. Junior Amateur was finally over on July 24.
Playing in his first junior championship final match against David Chung, 14, of Fayetteville, N.C., Kim knew that he would have his hands full with the 5-foot-5, 105-pounder. And after trailing 1 down after the first hole at the par 70 Olympic Club Lake course, Kim, who is almost twice the size of Chung, knew it would be a long day.

Event: Nike Golf Junior at Lee County
Course: Miromar Lakes Beach & GC
Where: Miromar Lakes, Fla.
When: July 19-22
Winners: Spencer Cole (65-69-71--205)/Courtney Harter (77-77-72--226)
Runners-up: Gregor Slabe (70-69-71--210)/Kristen Hill (75-78-74--227)
Skinny: Heading into the final round, Spencer Cole of Greer, S.C., knew there was nothing wrong with his game. After posting a course-record 7-under 65 and 3-under 69 in the first and second rounds, respectively, Cole began his last 18 with a five-stroke advantage.
''I just wanted to stick to my game plan and not change anything,'' said Cole, who cruised to an 11-shot victory with a final-round 71. '' I knew that would get it done.
'' Only two others -- Gregor Slabe (70-69-71--210) of Bradenton, Fla., and Jay Vandeventer (71-71-70--212) of Bristol, Va. -- finished each round under par. Slabe took second, while Vandeventer and Johnny DelPrete of Palm City, Fla., tied for third.
The shot of the tournament belonged to Ryan Haselden of Houston, who recorded an ace on No. 3 in the final round.
In the girls' division, Courtney Harter of Clearwater, Fla., who started the final round four shots back before making four bogeys in her first six holes, caught fire on the back nine to win by a stroke. She rolled in a 5-footer for par on her final hole, No. 1, to edge Kristen Hill of Weston, Fla., who shot 75-78-74--227. Second-round co-leaders Kathryn Detlefsen of Eagan, Minn., and Whitney Wenglasz of Oldsmar, Fla., both posted final-round 78s to finish two shots back at 228.

Event: Marsh Junior at Apawamis
Course: The Apawamis Club
Where: Rye, N.Y.
When: July 19-22
Winners: Peter Uihlein (73-72-72--217)/Nicole Smith (75-77-75--227)
Runners-up: Pete Alminas (75-69-78--222)/Kasi Lee (79-80-78--237)
Skinny: With an AJGA victory already this year at South Padre Island on his resume, Peter Uihlein of North Dartmouth, Mass., used an even-par 72 in the final round to win by five strokes and qualify for tournaments his buddies are always talking about.
''This gets me into all of the other events I wanted to get in to,'' said Uihlein, who hit a 3-iron 240 yards on No. 14 to save a crucial par on his way to a 217 total. ''All of my friends at the David Leadbetter Academy have been to Thunderbird (International Junior) and FootJoy (Boys Invitational). Now I've qualified, too.''
Pete Alminas of East Longmeadow, Mass., finished second with rounds of 75-69-78--222. That 69 was the tournament's low round, matched only by recent Solutions Consulting Junior Classic champion Christopher Gold (78-69-76-223) of Haddonfield, N.J. Haddonfield tied for third with Carl Santos-Campo (77-75-71) of Naples, Fla.
Nicole Smith of Riverside, Calif., ran away with the girls' division title, knocking in a birdie chip on No. 18 to cap a final round 75 and 10-stroke victory.
''I just wanted to go low today. I wasn't paying much attention to anything else,'' said Smith, who also chipped in at No. 7 for one of three birdies during a five-hole stretch. ''I didn't go as low as I wanted, but it was enough.'' More than enough, rather, to get her that first AJGA crown.
Kasi Lee of Paramus, N.J., finished second at 237, while Michelle Grilli of Lutherville, Md., placed third at 238.

Event: Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek
Course: Spring Meadows CC
Where: Linden, Mich.
When: July 19-22
Winners: Andy Shiels (67-75-70--212)/Dolores White (73-78-73--224)
Runners-up: Billy Rankin (71-69-73--213), Dan Doyle (69-75-69--213) and Clayton Parkhill (72-71-70--213)/Carly Truitt (74-73-77--224)
Skinny: Andy Shiels of Rockford, Ill., said his first AJGA victory couldn't have come at a better time. The University of Memphis freshman-to-be shot two under-par rounds, including a closing 2-under 72 for a 4-under 212 total and one-shot victory over three players.
''It was good to win (an AJGA event) before I go off to college,'' said Shiels, who held off second-round leader Billy Rankin of Traverse City, Mich., at 213, along with Dan Doyle of Rochester, Mich., and Clayton Parkhill of Champaign, Ill.
Dolores White of Lakeland, Fla., couldn't have timed that double-breaking, 8-foot birdie putt any better in the girls' division. It only came on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Carly Truitt of Marysville, Ohio, for her second-consecutive AJGA title.
''I was born here and I really wanted to win,'' said White, who won the previous week's First American Title Avila Junior in Tampa, Fla. ''All my family was here, including my grandfather, and that really got the fire going in me.''
The playoff almost didn't happen. She almost lost it in regulation, after hitting her drive right. She almost won it, too, when after hitting a 5-iron to just off the green her birdie putt almost dropped. ''It almost went in. I knew it was close,'' said White, who fired a final-round 70 for a 220 total.
Truitt posted 77 to fall into the playoff. Jordan Craig of Connellsville, Pa., finished third at 225.

Event: Abilene Reporter News/Lawrence Hall Abilene Junior
Course: Fairway Oaks CC
Where: Albilene, Texas
When: July 19-22
Winners: Cole Moreland (71-71-69--211)/Meredith McMahan (76-74-70)
Runners-up: Brandon Lakatta (70-69-75--214)/Brittany Tomerlin (75-77-78)
Skinny: Cole Moreland of Austin, Texas, birdied two of his first three holes en route to a final-round 3-under 69, good enough for his first AJGA title. Moreland's prior best finish was a T-33 at the AJGA Lubbock Junior in June.
''My short game helped me out a lot this week,'' said Moreland, who is entering his senior year of high school. ''This has been a fun week and I really enjoyed playing each day.''
The only player under par for all three rounds, Moreland finished with a 5-under 211 total, three strokes better than second-round leader Brandon Lakatta of Mansfield, Texas. Lakatta entered Day 3 up three, but closed with 75 for a 214 total. First-round leader Trent Whitekiller of Sallisaw, Okla., K.T. Livingtson of Midland, Texas, and Colton Williams of Jacksboro, Texas, all tied for third at 216.
You wouldn't have believed girls' division champion Meredith McMahan had spent a few hours in the hospital the night before after she closed with a 2-under par 70, her best of the week, to win her first AJGA title. But she did, and in style, on her way to a 10-shot victory.
''I was definitely a little jumpy this morning because I really wanted to win my first AJGA event,'' said McMahan, who was treated for dehydration. ''I was determined to overcome it.''
First-round leader Brittany Tomerlin of San Angelo, Texas, finished second at 230. Andrea Zwartynski of Allen, Texas, was third at 231.

Event: Golf Pride Junior Classic
Course: The Peninsula Club
Where: Cornelius, N.C.
When: July 19-22
Winners: Gregory O'Mahoney (66-65-70--201)/Laura Crawford (75-72-67--214)
Runners-up: Will Shambley (73-67-72--212) and Hayes Brown (68-69-75--212)/Dori Carter (72-75-72--219)
Skinny: Playing in his last AJGA event, Greg O'Mahoney of Tequest, Fla., went out on top, closing out a wire-to-wire victory with a 1-under 70 for an 11-stroke victory. It was the first, and last, AJGA victory for the soon-to-be University of South Florida freshman, whose best previous finish was a T-17 at the Ping Junior at Mirasol earlier this summer.
'This win gives me a lot of confidence going into my next event and starting college,'' said O'Mahoney, who finished at 12-under 201. ''It's great to know that I can compete with the top juniors in the world.''
Will Shambley of Cary, N.C., and Hayes Brown of Atlanta, tied for second at 212.
Laura Crawford of Lancaster, S.C., torched The Peninsula Club with a 5-under 67 in the final round to win the girls' division, and her first AJGA title, by five strokes. Crawford, who will be attending Wake Forest in the fall, made six birdies, including a stretch of three consecutive on Nos. 9,10 and 11.
''I hit the ball pretty well to give myself birdie opportunities and I was able to make the putts,'' said Crawford, who rolled in a 20-footer on No. 11. ''After Nos. 9-11, I just kept the momentum going from that and I tried to focus on making pars. This tournament showed me what I can do when I make putts, which will help in college.''
Dori Carter of Valdosta, Ga., finished second with a total of 219. Angela King of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., was third at 221.

ELLIOTT: SOME PARENTS
JUST DO UNDERSTAND

Following a week at the U.S. Junior Amateur it was a pair of observations that traveled with me from San Francisco to central Florida. The overriding themes in San Francisco were the quality of junior golf, which has never been better, and parents who tend to get in the way of their child's success on and off the golf course.

The pressure of a U.S. Junior is hard enough on any player and nonsupportive parents only compound the stress. Take player 'A,' for example, who lost his first-round match and was greeted by 'Parent A' who said, ''if you would have putted better, you would still be in the tournament.''

NEWS AND NOTES

* Not many golfers have the bragging rights of being second only to Tiger Woods. But on July 24, when Sihwan Kim had his name added to the U.S. Junior Amateur trophy, he became the second youngest to win the prestigious award. In 1991, when Woods won the first of three U.S. Juniors, he was only 22 days younger than 15-year-old Kim.

Laughing, Kim said, ''it's second, so it doesn't count,'' but he is thrilled about his victory.

* It won't be Bill Murray and Ray Romano in February but for 20 juniors the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach is close enough, at least for now.

Fifteen boys and five girls qualified for the pro-am portion of the Champions Tour event which will be played Sept. 3-5 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and nearby Bayonet Golf Club. The qualifiers, who are members of The First Tee program, were evaluated on life skills comprehension, as well as playing ability.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
Students entering college in 2005 will not be subject to any requirements of the new SAT that will be given starting in the spring 2005. Most colleges and universities will admit 2006 high-school graduates with either the old or new SAT and will consider the higher score if both tests are taken. However, some academically competitive institutions want to see results of the new writing section included in the new SAT before admitting freshmen in 2006.

Changes in the new SAT include:

* A 45-minute increase in the total time of the exam from 3 hours to 3:45.

* A new section requiring a written essay that will have a possible 800 points and increase the best possible SAT score from 1,600 to 2,400.

* Analogies will be eliminated. Analogy questions currently account for about one-quarter of the verbal section of the SAT and test students' ability to find the relationship between a pair of given words and then identify a pair of words from the answer choices that has the same relationship.

* Shorter reading passages will be added to the verbal section.

* Quantitative comparisons will be eliminated. This is the section of the math test asking students to look at two expressions or mathematical statements and choose which is of greater value.

* New content from third-year college-prep math will be added.
