The final chapter was supposed to have Saunders capture the title July 30 -- on his 17th birthday -- in front of a slew of family, friends and relatives.

Skinny: Amanda Blumenherst held off a red-hot Julieta Granada July 29 to win her first AJGA major title. Granada, the newly crowned U.S. Girls' Junior champion, carded a final-round 71 to fall one stroke shy of Blumenherst (70) at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls.
Granada birdied the 17th hole to close the gap to one stroke, but Blumenherst dropped an 8-foot par putt on the final hole to clinch the title.
''I hit the ball very well today,'' said Bluemenherst, who notched her third AJGA title of the season. ''I was anxious to get out and play because I've never won a major championship.''
Megan Grehan began the final round tied for third and failed to move up a slot after finishing at 4-over-par 217, three shots behind Blumenherst.

Skinny: Brandon Pike's dramatic finish secured his first AJGA title July 29 at the Boyne Highlands Junior. The Huntington, Ind., resident birdied the final two holes at Boyne Highlands Resort to edge a pack of four other players by two strokes.
''After making double on No. 16, I figured I was out of it,'' Pike said. ''I had no idea what everyone else was doing. My dad knew, but he didn't tell me until after the round. It was just a great finish.''
In the girls' division, Ontario's Lisa Maunu carded a final-round 75 to outlast Brianna Do by one stroke. Maunu, the first-round leader, made four birdies, including one on the final hole. Do shot three consecutive 75s to finish second.
''I was aiming for a top-5 finish, but I had no idea,'' Maunu said. ''I hit the ball well and I am still in shock. I had a lot of family support, and this tournament means a lot because it was against very good American competition. I cannot believe I won.''

But now your thoughts have turned to the confusion that consumed you four years ago as your freshman year of high school approached.

Yes, it's time to be a freshman all over again. If you're traveling away from home there will be new surroundings, new friends and a different way of schooling. Just like when you entered high school. But this time it's a little different.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
After the SAT announced the addition of the essay-writing section to their test, the ACT has followed with a similar program. The ACT will add a 30-minute writing test as an optional component to the ACT Assessment, beginning in February 2005, for students within the United States who are applying to college for fall 2006 or later.

The ACT writing test will complement the English test (25 percent of the ACT score). ACT officials say the combined information from both will tell post-secondary institutions about students' understanding of the conventions of standard written English and their ability to produce a direct sample of writing.

ACT administrators will let students decide whether to take the writing test based on the requirements of colleges they are considering.
