NEWS AND NOTES

* In order to create a more accurate junior golf ranking, Golfweek will use a 52-week, rolling window for its Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings.

Unlike previous years when the rankings measured performance from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, next season's rankings will include finishes in ranked-events over the past year. On Sept. 8, for example, finishes in events played the first week of September, 2003, will be removed and replaced with the most current week's results.

Junior golf's year-round schedule prompted the change to the new, 52-week window.

''We're doing this to more accurately reflect the reality of junior golf and how our rankings are used by coaches, parents and players,'' said James Nugent, Golfweek's vice president/publisher.

A tentative list of next season's ranked events will be published in the Aug. 20 newsletter.

* The Canon Cup changed hands in dramatic fashion Aug. 5 as the East team completed an impressive two-day rally to edge the West 25 1/2-24 1/2 in the Ryder Cup-style event. In the deciding match of the tournament, Jon McLean of Weston, Fla., held on at No. 18 to halve his match with Lucas Lee of Torrance, Calif., and close out the victory at Caves Valley Golf Club.

The East's victory broke the West's three-year winning streak and improved the East's record to 8-6-1 in the American Junior Golf Association event that features 40 top junior players split into 20-person teams by region.

* Josh Dupont of Poway, Calif., and Tessa Teachman of Webster, N.Y., led the way on the Junior Ryder Cup points list and will anchor the team at the matches Sept. 11-12 at Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio.

Europe won the inaugural Junior Ryder Cup in 2002 at the K-Club in Ireland, 9 1/2 to 2 1/2.

Former PGA of America president Will Mann will captain the U.S. team while Andy Ingram will lead the European squad.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
Recruited student-athletes may take official (institution paid) campus visits beginning with the first day of classes for their senior year of high school. Prospects are allowed no more than five such official visits; however, they may visit as many campuses as they desire if they pay their own expenses. These unofficial visits may take place without regard to the prospect's year in school.

The NCAA Management Council met in July and proposed new recruiting rules regarding alcohol use and supervision during campus visits. Another proposal would eliminate flying recruits for visits on private jets, housing them in resort hotels and feeding them extravagant meals.

This lavish attention seldom involves golfers; however, the proposed new rules that will be voted on in April 2005 will affect all recruits. Current NCAA guidelines allow a parent's or guardian's transportation to be paid by the institution only if travel is by automobile. One of the Council's new recommendations would allow schools to pay for one parent or guardian to accompany a recruit on an official visit and reduce the official visits from five to four.

A few attention-getting violations and/or stretching the spirit of the recruiting guidelines will again result in more restrictive rules for all institutions and prospects.
