Golfweek Junior Golf Report - Vol. 4, No. 22
09.10.04

TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Event: Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior
Course: Magnolia Grove GC (Falls, Crossings courses)
When: Sept. 3-6
Where: Mobile, Ala.
Winners: Paul Haley, Dallas (72-71--143)/Angela Park, Torrance, Calif. (68-69--137)
Runners-up: Lion Kim, Lake Mary, Fla. (71-72--143)/Morgan Pressel, Boca Raton, Fla. (71-66‹137)
Skinny: Angela Park of Torrance, Calif., won by less than an inch, which left her a little more than surprised at the AJGA's summer-ending Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior. Park defeated Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., with a par on the first playoff hole after Pressel left her 10-foot par putt on the lip of the hole.
''I thought I would have to make a birdie to win, considering how good of a player Morgan is,'' said Park, who finished at 68-69--137.
After an opening 71, Pressel closed with a tournament-low 66 to force the playoff. Julieta Granada of Asuncion, Paraguay, finished five shots back in third at 71-71--142.
A playoff also decided the boys' division, as Paul Haley (71-72--143) of Dallas, hit his approach to 5 feet on the first extra hole and made birdie - his fourth consecutive - to outlast Lion Kim (71-72-143) of Torrance, Calif., who found trouble in a fairway bunker.
Originally scheduled as a 54-hole event, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to Hurricane Frances.

Event: Nike Golf Junior Championship
Course: Langdon Farms GC
When: Sept. 3-5
Where: Aurora, Ore.
Winners: Mu Hu, Celebration, Fla. (69-72-66--207)/Taylore Karle, Scottsdale, Ariz. (73-71-73--217)
Runners-up: Brian Kim, Yorba Linda, Calif. (71-70-69--210)/Natalie Sheary, West Hartford, Conn. (77-74-74--225) and Sarah Salvo, Glendale, Calif., (75-74-76--225)
Skinny: Not this year, thought Mu Hu as he watched his second shot on the par-5 18th cut over water and land safely on the green.
A year ago, Hu stepped to the 18th tee at Langdon Farms Golf Club with a good chance to win the tournament. But his approach sailed into the hazard, costing him a shot at the title.
This year, his 3-iron approach found the putting surface and he two-putted for birdie and a three-shot victory.
''I was really nervous about hitting it into the water, but it cut and landed safely,'' said Hu, who had rounds of 69-72-66--207. ''It was such a relief.''
Brian Kim of Yorba Linda, Calif., finished second with rounds of 71-70-69. Conrad Shindler of Coppell, Texas, was third at 212.
In the girls' division, Taylore Karle of Scottsdale Ariz., cruised to her second AJGA title this year. Karle closed with 73 to finish with a 217 total.
''I am very happy with how I played, and now it's back to school,'' said Karle, who earlier this year won the Nike Golf Junior at Las Cruces and finished second at the Nike Golf Junior at Quad Cities. ''I'm looking forward to next year and I'll be back here next year.''
Sarah Salvo of Glendale, Calif., and Natalie Sheary of West Hartford, Conn., finished tied for second at 225.

Event: Family Toyota/Family Honda Junior
Course: Coto de Caza G&RC (South)
When: Aug. 17-20
Where: Coto de Caza, Calif.
Winners: James Lee, La Habra, Calif. (74-65-69--208)/Tiffany Joh, San Diego, Calif. (79-66-69--214)
Runners-up: Rory Hie, Lakewood, Calif. (75-64-71--210)/Ki-Shui Liao, Alameda, Calif. (73-72-70--215)
Skinny: Two future classmates posted final-round 69s to win at the Family Toyota/Family Honda Junior. James Lee of La Habra, Calif., and Tiffany Joh of San Diego, Calif., both 17, who have both committed to attend UCLA, each used low second rounds and solid 3-under finales to complete come-from-behind victories.
Lee began the day four shots back, but rallied for three birdies in his final five holes to win by two over Rory Hie of Lakewood, Calif. ''This win is really big for me,'' said Lee, who was two shots back with four holes to play. ''I had been struggling earlier in the summer, and after shooting 74 on the first day, I thought I was going to be in trouble. I'm happy with the way I came back.''
Joh made a similar charge on her back nine, posting a 33 to secure her third AJGA title of the year. ''I really wasn't hitting the ball very well but I was saving myself with my putting,'' said Joh, whose 2004 resume also includes wins at the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship and the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills. ''This victory feels really good. I had to come back from a high score the first day and that makes this win special.''

Event: AJGA Richmond Junior
Course: Salisbury CC
When: Aug. 16-19
Where: Midlothian, Va.
Winners: Kevin O'Connell, Cary, N.C. (70-67-74--211)/Julieta Granada, Asuncion, Paraguay (68-73-68--209)
Runners-up: Timothy Courtney, Midlothian, Va. (71-70-70--211)/Michelle Grilli, Lutherville, Md. (72-69-72--213)
Skinny: Despite his struggles with the driver, Kevin O'Connell of Cary, N.C., won the inaugural AJGA Richmond Junior, ousting hometown favorite Timothy Courtney of Midlothian, Va., on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. After a wayward tee shot that found a left fairway bunker on the only playoff hole, No. 18, O'Connell slammed his approach to 8 feet and two-putted for par. Courtney found the fairway with his drive, but missed the green with his approach and failed to get up-and-down.
''I didn't drive the ball as well (Thursday),'' O'Connell, 17, said. ''I really just had to hang in there all day because Timothy (Courtney) was playing well.
''It feels great to win -- I never expected it,'' he added. ''I haven't had the best summer, but I just kept on working on my game and it paid off.''
Brian Belden, of Emmanus, Pa., missed the playoff by a stroke, ending with rounds of 71-67-74--212.
In the girls' division, Julieta Granada of Asuncion, Paraguay, used seven birdies and a final-round 68 to cruise to her third AJGA title of 2004. Her other wins this year include the Rolex Girls Junior, Randall Parker Shootout and the U.S. Girls' Junior.
''It feels really great to win,'' Granada said. ''I'm really happy with my game and it keeps improving.''
Runner-up Michelle Grilli of Lutherville, Md., was the only other player under par at 68-73-68--209. Stephanie Connelly of Pasadena, Md., finished third at 74-74-70--218.

Event: IRI Golf Group Tri-Cities Junior at Sun Willows
Course: Sun Willows GC
When: Aug. 17-20
Where: Pasco, Wash.
Winners: Matthew Pierce Jr., San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (68-68-66--202)/Kimberly Kim, Pahoa, Hawaii (69-74-69--212)
Runners-up: Jason Kang, Torrance, Calif. (66-71-69--206)/Grace Woo, Burbank, Calif. (72-72-70--214)
Skinny: It wasn't difficult for Matthew Pierce of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., to describe his final-round 6-under 66 and win in the IRI Golf Group Tri-Cities Junior, his first AJGA title.
''I just didn't make mistakes and that is what made the difference,'' said Pierce, 15, who didn't make a bogey in his last 27 holes, making only two the entire tournament. ''It feels really good to get my first win at an open event.''
It was also a maiden victory for Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, who won competing in her first AJGA event. The then 12-year-old fired a course-record 69 in the first round and matched it in the final round to finish 4-under, two strokes ahead of Grace Woo of Burbank, Calif. Entering the day tied with Kristy Yun of University Place, Wash., Kim, who turned 13 Aug. 23, birdied three of her first five holes and never looked back.
''I just talked to my family on the phone and they are so excited,'' Kim said. ''This is an early birthday present and I hope the rest of my AJGA career will be just as fun.''

Event: PING Phoenix Junior
Course: Moon Valley CC
When: Aug. 19-22
Where: Phoenix
Winners: Roberto Galletti Jr., Vallejo, Calif. (71-70-71--212)/Amanda Blumenherst, Scottsdale, Ariz. (65-73-65--203)
Runners-up: Philip Francis, Scottsdale, Ariz. (70-69-74--213)/Jennie Lee, Huntington Beach, Calif. (70-75-70--215)
Skinny: Roberto Galletti, Jr., of Vallejo, Calif., didn't think he'd been swinging well enough to be in contention. ''I didn't know I was even in the running until I heard from a fellow competitor on the 11th hole,'' said Galletti, 16, whose one-birdie, 17-par closing 71 was good enough for a one-shot victory over second-round co-leader Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz. ''I kept my mind on my shots and was able to stay relaxed throughout the rest of the round.''
Francis posted rounds of 70-69-74--213 to finish second, while fellow second-round co-leader Kyle Nielsen of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., fell to third, with a 3-over-par 75 and 214 total.
In the girls' division, Rolex Junior All-American Amanda Blumenherst of Scottsdale, Ariz., used a pair of 65s to win by 12 shots. The dominating performance was her 10th career AJGA victory, and her fourth of 2004.
''I have confidence in my game, and the course really fit my tee shots and iron play well,'' said Blumenherst, 17, who also won this year at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship, the PING Indianapolis Junior and AJGA Southwestern Junior.
Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach, Calif., finished second at 1-under 215. Esther Choe of La Quinta, Calif., and Taylore Karle of Scottsdale, Ariz., shared third at 220.

Event: CJGA Alberta Championship Series
Course: Shaw-nee Slopes GC
When: Aug. 16-18
Where: Calgary, Alberta
Winners: Scott Genoway, Calgary, Alberta (77-70-72--219)/Megan Claxton, Calgary, Alta. (81-81-89-251)
Runner-up: Sean Rodgers, Stony Plain, Alberta (74-67-78--219)/Crystal Shapka, Okotoks, Alberta (89-82-82--253)
Skinny: Seventeen-year-old Scott Genoway of Calgary, Alberta, admittedly was a little nervous as he stepped to the tee of his first-ever sudden-death playoff hole. But he survived, halving the hole with Sean Rodgers, 18, then beating him on the following one.
''That was the first time that I've been in a playoff so I was a little shaky,'' Genoway said. ''Luckily I managed to pull it off.''
In the girls' division, Megan Claxton, 17, of Calgary posted a three-day total of 251 to win her fist CJGA title by two strokes over Crystal Shapka, 16. ''The driver was really working well,'' Claxton said, ''and my short game was on.''

Event: Mizuno CJGA National Golf Championship
Course: St. Andrew's Valley G&CC
When: Aug. 16-19
Where: Aurora, Ontario
Winners: Will Mitchell, Whitby, Ontario (71-73-70-72--286)/Hayley Brown, Newmarket, Ontario (84-84-81-80--329)
Runner-up: Patrick Forbes, Toronto (72-77-73-73--295)/Helena Harbridge, Toronto (81-84-79-86--330)
Skinny: The weather wasn't right at the CJGA National Golf Championship, but Will Mitchell surely was. The Whitby, Ont., native was the only player to finish under par, posting rounds of 71-73-70-72--286 to finish 2 under in unseasonably windy, cool conditions, nine strokes better than Patrick Forbes of Toronto. ''It feels great to win,'' said Mitchell, the playing captain of CJGA Team Canada at this year's Mizuno North America Cup. ''My confidence is really high right now.''
The girls' division was much closer. Hayley Brown of Newmarket, Ontario, rolled in a 30-footer on the 18th hole to win the title, avoiding a playoff with runner-up and third-round leader Helena Harbridge, 16, of Toronto. ''The course was challenging but I was able to drain quite a few putts and all parts of my game were solid,'' Brown said.

Event: New England Junior Championship
Course: Cochecho CC
When: Aug. 15-17
Where: Dover, N.H.
Winner: Evan Beirne, North Haven, Conn. (73-66-69--208)
Runner-up: Brent Paladino, Kensington, Conn. (70-68-72--210)
Skinny: Evan Beirne, of North Haven, Conn., made two birdies in his final three holes to win the New England Junior Championship by two strokes over teammate Brent Paladino of Kensington, Conn. Tied with Paladino on the 16th green, Beirne, 16, holed a 20-footer for birdie to take a one-stroke lead. He made another birdie at 17 and tapped in for a meaningless bogey on 18 to finish off a final-round 1-under 69. Paladino lost the championship with a double bogey on 17 after hitting his drive left out of bounds. That gave Beirne a four-shot edge on the 18th tee.
Both players, however, shared a part of the team title. Team Connecticut won with a score of 1,078. New Hampshire finished second, 15 strokes behind at 1,093. Massachusetts was third (1,103), Rhode Island fourth (1,118), Vermont fifth (1,120) and Maine sixth (1,136).

LIEBERMAN: ROAD TRIP
REVEALS GAME'S MERIT

Driving 11,000 miles in six weeks isn't quite your average road trip. I think it qualifies as an adventure. And it truly has been, one that has carried me and three others across America in a white Ford Excursion.

The first week of June I arrived at the oldest American city of St. Augustine, Fla., with a red duffle bag and a travel guitar, unaware of what I was really getting myself into.

* The Royal Canadian Golf Association announced its 2004 Spirit of Golf award winners Aug. 17. The Spirit of Golf award is given to juniors who participated in the BMO Financial Group Future Links program and demonstrated a passion, dedication and commitment for the game.

Charles Etienne Boucher of Montreal; Laura Harris of New Minas, Nova Scotia; Alyssa Herkel of Port Alberni, British Columbia; David Lawson of Bracebridge, Ontario; Jason McKinlay of Consort, Alberta; and Bri-Ann Tokariwski of Winnipeg were given this year's Spirit of Golf award.

* Hawaiian teen-ager Michelle Wie and 13-year-old Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., have earned spots in the LPGA's Safeway Classic to be played Sept. 17-19 at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore. To qualify, Rah posted a 4-over 76 Aug. 23 at Langdon Farms Golf Club in the Safeway Classic Amateur Open. She beat Kailin Downs of Bend, Ore., by a shot, and Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., by three. Both Downs and Harigae were awarded exemptions into the Safeway Classic Monday qualifier.

* Brad Blakley of Mead, Wash., won the 50th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Boys' Amateur Championship Aug. 27, defeating John Wise of Issaquah, Wash., 3 and 2, in the 36-hole final. Blakley, a senior-to-be, dropped in a 15-footer on the 34th hole to close out the match at Spokane (Wash.) Country Club. Christy Yun of University Place, Wash., won the 49th PNGA Junior Girls' Amateur Championship, outlasting Molly Black of Bend, Ore., 1 up, in the 18-hole final. After birdies on 11, 12 and 13, Yun had a 4-up advantage. But Black struck back, winning holes 14, 15 and 17 to send the match to the final hole. A pair of three-putts halved 18. Last year, Black's sister Jessica lost to Renee Skidmore of Everett, Wash., 2 and 1.

* Vincent Adams of Boisbriand, Quebec, captured his first Canadian Junior Golf Association title of the year, winning the CJGA Ottawa PGA Junior Championship Aug. 26 at the Upper Canada Golf Club in Morrisburgh, Ontario, with a 79-74-71-224 total. ''I've gone a long time without a win,'' said Adams, 15. ''It feels good to get the pressure off.'' Brittany Henderson, 13, of Smiths Falls, Ont., won the girls' division for her sixth victory of the season with rounds of 80-74-76--230. ''All aspects of my game were pretty consistent,'' Henderson said.

* Short shots: It would have been interesting to see what Alexander Retsch-Bogart of Chapel Hill, N.C., would have done on the par-3, 152-yard eighth hole at Salisbury Country Club had there been another round in the AJGA Richmond Junior. He had no room for improvement, considering he aced the hole on the final day using an 8-iron. That put him at 3 under for three days, after a par in the first round and birdie in the second. He finished the tournament tied for 10th at 73-75-69--217. . . . The first six 2004-05 events (the Fall Rush) have been announced by the 2004-2005 Florida Junior Tour, which will visit Bear Lakes CC, Bloomingdale GC, PGA Golf Club, Disney and Orange County National. At the conclusion of the Fall Rush, a point system will determine which FJT players will have the opportunity to spend a day with PGA Tour pros John Cook and Mark O'Meara at Isleworth Country Club. Visit www.floridajuniortour.org for more information. . . .Team West completed an unprecedented comeback Aug. 26 to win the Canadian Junior Golf Association's Lipton Brisk Canada Cup. The Western team dominated the final-round singles matches, capturing six of a possible eight points to capture the Cup for the first time in the two-year history of the event. ''I knew we had a chance,'' said Team West's playing captain Dustin Yeager of Chemainus, B.C., who won his final match 1 up.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Bronson Burgoon
Age: 17
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 32nd (as of 08.24.04)
Residence: The Woodlands, Texas
The Skinny: Standing alone in some shade behind the eighth green at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Fla., July 29, Texas A&M's assistant men's golf coach, Chris Gougenheim, watched intently as Bronson Burgoon sank a 25-footer to save bogey in the second round of the AJGA's HP Boys Junior Championship. After a couple of claps, Gougenheim began his trot down the ninth fairway.

''We just call him Googs,'' said Burgoon, laughing, just minutes after a third-round 70. He got that information from his brother, Brandon, a sophomore on the A&M roster. According to Burgoon, who finished T-7 at Bay Hill, he has also verbally committed to play for the Aggies, beginning in 2005. ''It's going to be real fun,'' he said.

A limited travel budget kept Burgoon's 2004 summer schedule to five national tournaments (four top-10 finishes, one top 5), but look for this Woodlands (Texas) High School senior to make a run at his second Texas 5A state individual championship.
