Gihm: Early start is key
to finding right college

Winter is here and working on your game can be an advantage for the coming season. But with cooler temperatures comes shorter days and in the few spare hours you have between homework, practice, social matters and other hobbies, it's not a bad idea to start looking at possible colleges.

If you're a high school senior you probably know where you're applying and the components are all put together. If you're a junior or sophomore it would definitely be an advantage to gain knowledge early about schools and their golf programs. á

NEWS AND NOTES
* The Golf Foundation of Wisconsin recently named Michael Bielowski of West Allis and Tina Kocinski of Mequon the boys and girls players of the year. Bielowski, a senior at Nathan High School, won three tournaments on the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour Series this year and two on the WPGA Players Tour Series.

Kocinski has also won a handful of events this year, capturing four WPGA Junior Tour Series events and one Players Tour event. The senior at Homestead High School also captured the GFW Invitational crown and finished fourth at the WIAA state tournament.

* The 2002-03 Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index list of ranked tournaments has been compiled.

To be ranked throughout the season a player must have played in a minimum number of tournaments (two tournaments by Jan. 1, three by May 1, four by June 30, five by July 29). To be included in the year-ending rankings a player must have played in six events from September 2002 to September 2003.

* The San Diego County Junior Golf Association threw itself a 50th birthday party Nov. 6.

Guests included Billy Casper, Gene Littler, John Schroeder, Craig Stadler, Scott Simpson, Phil Mickelson, Chris Riley and Pat Perez. Together the eight men boast 122 PGA Tour victories, six major championships, five NCAA individual championships and eight U.S. Golf Association titles. With the exception of Casper and Littler, they also played the SDJGA.

The organization was founded in 1952 and the $3 membership fee, $1 entry fee and quality courses attracted a myriad of juniors.

San Diego State coach Dale Walker, who played San Diego Junior Golf from 1962-75, told the Union Tribune that juniors could play La Jolla Country Club for $1, which included lunch. "Because of that," Walker said, "I think San Diego was on the forefront of attracting better athletes to golf."

Schroeder, who played 13 years on the PGA Tour and is currently a member of the Champions (formerly Senior PGA) Tour, also has fond memories of his time playing the SDJGA.

"When I first went out to national competitions, it was a joke," Schroeder said. "I was so far ahead of the rest of the competition. In San Diego, we'd been playing 15 tournaments a year, on different courses, under all kinds of conditions. It was great."

* Last week Peter Nascimento became the second youngest player to tee it up in a PGA Tour of AustralAsia tournament.

At 15 years, seven months, Nascimento shot 1-over 72 to qualify for the New South Wales Open at the Horizons Resort near Port Stephens, Australia.

Bradley Hughes, who turned 15 the day he began play at the 1982 Victorian Open, still holds the record as the youngest player. Hughes, however, missed the cut after rounds of 76-84.

Like Hughes, Nascimento failed to see any weekend action after carding rounds of 77-78 for an 11-over 155 total.

* Short Shots: The Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club hosted Florida's Class 1A Region 6 Girls' Golf Tournament Nov. 4. Eight high school teams competed for the title and the chance to advance to the state tournament. Bishop Verot and Northside Christian were the top two teams and will compete at the Class A tournament at PGA Golf Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Nov. 12-13. Individual qualifiers include Catherina Wang of St. Stephens and Ashley Lambert of Cardinal Mooney.. . . . The Junior Amateur Golf Scholars organization is hosting the Collegiate Holiday Classic Dec. 17-19. The event will be held at the Southern California PGA at Oak Valley in Calimesa, Calif., and the costs $250 per player. Undergraduate men and women who are currently attending a college or university are eligible and the entry deadline is Dec. 2.
