JUNIOR PGA WINNER
LIKELY TO LOSE TITLE

By Mike Mazur

The PGA of America is investigating allegations that reigning Westfield Junior PGA champion Sung Ea Lee was overage during her victory last July.

Lee, of Tacoma, Wash., is a scholarship freshman on the University of Washington golf team. The school's media guide and the American Junior Golf Association list Lee's birth date as June 10, 1984, which would have made her 18 -- over the age limit of 17 -- when the tournament began July 17 at The Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio.

TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* FCWT Junior Challenge at Plantation

Christine Yum won the girls title Feb. 23 at The Junior Challenge at Plantation Golf Club in Crystal River, Fla. Yum closed with an even-par 72 for a 5-over 149 total, two shots ahead of Marie Bos and four better than Tiffany Chudy.

Yum, who earned her first FCWT victory in only her second start, said the key to her victory was her putting and a solid second round.

Bos shot a closing 77, while Chudy, who won the Tampa Bay Bull Shootout two weeks ago, had 78.

Coffin: World No. 1 has fun
at Girl Power Golf clinic

The fact that a 10-year-old girl knows the importance of Annika Sorenstam's decision to play the PGA Tour's Bank of America Colonial speaks volumes. And the fact that Sorenstam and fellow LPGA Tour star Emilee Klein took time out of their busy schedules to host a clinic for 80 girls speaks more volumes.

Sorenstam and Klein hosted the second Girl Power Golf Club clinic Feb. 23 at the posh Lake Nona Club, where both are residents, for 80 girls ranging from ages 10 to 18.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
The NCAA recently increased the core-course requirement from 13 to 14 courses in calculating a prospective student-athletes GPA for freshman academic eligibility. Will that affect the colleges and universities competing under NAIA membership?

The NAIA is a separate organization from the NCAA, and 4-year institutions choose which entity they wish to join for intercollegiate athletics competition. To be eligible to compete as a freshman at an NAIA school, a student-athlete's only academic requirements are to achieve a minimum 2.0 high school GPA and 860 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT. Unlike the NCAA, the NAIA does not allow combining partial scores from different testing dates to meet the minimum required score.
