Golfweek Junior Golf Report - Vol. 3 No. 4
Feb. 5, 2003

TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* Junior Heritage

Paula Creamer made history Feb. 2 while Sean Moore took the time to savor golf history on the famous Harbour Town Golf Links.

Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., finished at 2-under 141 to take the girls division title at the Junior Heritage while Moore of Marshville, N.C., ended at 1-under 142 to win the boys division.

With the victory, Creamer, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, won her sixth consecutive ranked event since last August. The 16-year-old has been flawless this season, with a perfect 4-0 record, a feat that had never been accomplished before in the history of the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index.

''Paula is a great player and she played well,'' said In-Bee Park of Eustis, Fla., who finished one-shot back at 142.

For Moore, golf is something very serious and playing the final round of a major junior tournament on his favorite course was a dream come true. Moore has worn knickers every time he has played since the age of five. So for the 16th-ranked junior, standing on the 18th hole, which has been considered one of golf's greatest finishing holes, was golf heaven.

* FCWT Junior Classic at Seaside

Tyler Hitchcock claimed his first FCWT victory this year Feb. 2 at the Junior Classic at Seaside. Hitchcock finished with a 10-over 220 total, one shot clear of Matt Fast.

''I hit the ball well all weekend, but struggled with the tough greens,'' said Hitchcock.

Patrick Gibson finished third at 223.

In the girls 15-19 division, Sookhee Baek claimed her first title this season with a 231 total.

''Putting was tough. If you missed putts you lost your confidence on the greens which is no good,'' said Baek, who edged Marie Bos by eight shots and Brittany Collins by nine.

ELLIOTT: PERFORMANCE ENTRY
A VICTORY FOR JUNIORS, AJGA

The American Junior Golf Association's new Performance Based Entry system is a giant step in the right direction and many players and parents tend to agree.

Reaction from the junior golf community has been favorable to the association's initiative. The consensus is the new system is more objective and if you play well you'll get your chance.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
There are 259 men's and 136 women's college golf teams competing at NCAA Division III institutions. These schools provide opportunities for high-school players to continue their athletic careers at the intercollegiate level so it's important to understand how the new NCAA academic standards for freshmen eligibility affect prospective student-athletes in Division III.

A recent inquiry to the NCAA confirmed that the academic guidelines for Division III eligibility did not change. The reasoning is that a high percent of Division III schools have high academic admission requirements, and scholarships based on athletic ability are not allowed at this level. The NCAA also does not require Clearinghouse registration prior to Division III enrollment or competition.
