TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* AJGA -- Ashworth Preseason Junior at Highland Oaks

Arnond Vongvanij captured his first AJGA title March 9 with a 2-under 70 at the Ashworth Preseason Junior at Highland Oaks. Overnight thunderstorms that continued into the morning made the Dothan, Ala., course unplayable and forced the cancellation of the final round.

Vongvanij, 14, was born in Hawaii and moved to Florida in 2001.

Steven Ransom of St. Augustine, Fla., who shot 73, finished second. Tied for third at 74 were Stanton Lanham of Huntersville, N.C., and Blake Davis of Huntington, W.Va.

Megan McLeod of Fallbrook, Calif., went wire-to-wire in the girls 15-19 division as she shot 73-79 to finish one stroke ahead of Allison Goodman (78). Angela King was alone in third at 158.

Parker Houston added to his one-stroke lead going into the final round by winning the boys 11-12 division by two strokes. In the girls 11-14 division, Brianna Do followed her opening 88 with a second-round 77 for a 165 total and the victory.

Flores closed with 76 for a 5-over 221 total, edging Rob Grube of Pebble Beach, Calif., by two shots. Grube also shot 76 and finished at 223.

In the girls 15-19 division, 13-year-old Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., finished two strokes ahead of second-round leader Casey Gee of Sacramento, Calif. Harigae finished with 75 (234) while Gee carded 78 (236). Down by seven strokes after four holes, Harigae finished with 12 consecutive pars and birdied 18 to slam the door.

The boys 13-15 division was captured by Bentley Eidsmo of Monterey, Calif., who needed one extra hole to edge Geoff Gonzalez of Diablo, Calif. Eidsmo and Gonzalez finished at 152.

ELLIOTT: KNOWING THE RULES
CAN FEND OFF HEARTBREAK

Almost every week you can bank on a LPGA, Champions, Nationwide or PGA tour player getting disqualified from an event due to one reason or another. From signing an incorrect scorecard to taking an incorrect drop, two of the most common infractions, it all leads back to one simple truth -- knowing the Rules of Golf.

For those in the play-for-pay ranks, a DQ can be costly. Although there's no paycheck on the line, a junior run afoul of the rules can be almost as disheartening. The only way to avoid such missteps is by reading, and learning, the Rules of Golf.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
How do NCAA and NAIA rules differ on the number of allowable campus recruiting visits?

The NCAA allows a prospective student-athlete to accept a maximum of five institution-paid recruiting visits which applies even if the student is being recruited in more than one sport. The recruit may accept only one paid visit to a particular school, but there is no limit on the number of schools or campus visits if the student-athlete pays their own way.

There are no limits to the number of visits a student-athlete may make to NAIA institutions, however, no part of the recruit's expenses may be paid by the institution unless such a practice is part the institution's general policy for recruiting any student with special talent.
