TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* Spacecoast Junior Classic

In-Bee Park cruised to a 14-stroke victory April 13 at the Spacecoast Junior Classic. Park, the reigning U.S. Girls' Junior champion and No. 2 ranked player in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, carded rounds of 70-67 at La Cita Country Club to earn her first title since December's Orange Bowl International. Jacqui Concolina finished second after rounds of 79-72.

While the girls division lacked any down-to-the-wire action, the boys division proved pressure packed. Joshua Carr held on for the victory with a final-round 74. Carr's 149 total edged Kevin Lim, who shot 73-77. Giwon Suh (76) and Danny Weisenberg (72) finished two shots back at 151.

* FCWT -- Cape Cod Classic

Todd Shagin had two birdies and three bogeys on his way to victory April 13 at the weather-plagued FCWT Cape Cod Classic. Shagin, who finished 10th at this event last year, shot 73 on the New Seabury Ocean course in Mashpee, Mass., for his second victory of the season.

After a week of heavy rain the Ocean course was not playable Saturday and reduced the tournament to 18 holes.

"I loved the course and my key to success was hitting most of the greens in regulation,'' Shagin said.

Freshman Tyler Ferrari earned his first FCWT victory in the boys 13-15 division after carding 75. Ferrari credited his coach with his improved mental approach.

Junior Debbie Amanti won the girls division for the second consecutive year with 92.

* IJGT -- Seaview Marriott (Pines Course), Absecon, N.J.

Thomas Bethel recorded his second consecutive IJGT victory April 13 at the Seaview Marriott. Bethel, who won the IJGT event at TPC Woodlands (Texas) last week, posted rounds of 74-77 for 9-over 151 total.

The Nassau, Bahamas, native edged Michael Quagliano (78-74) of White Plains, N.Y., by one stroke.

In the boys 13-15 division, Brendan Gielow improved on last week's runner-up finish by coming in first place. Gielow carded the only sub-par round of the tournament (70). His second-round 77 was enough to edge Christopher Gold, whose 12th-hole ace pushed him into second with a 9-over 151 total.

Nannette Hill of Pelham Manor, N.Y., easily won the girls 15-19 division. Hill carded back-to-back 76s for a ten-stroke victory. Katey Gumz was second after a consistent showing of 81-81.

In the girls 11-14 division, Marina Alex of Wayne, N.J., pulled off a one-stroke victory by carding rounds of 81-84.

HOGGARD: CADDYING COOL
WAY TO SPEND SUMMER

Like a well-rehearsed scene from some sort of green-grass ballet, caddie and player agree on the speed and direction of an 8-footer for par using little more than a nod and a few one-syllable retorts.

The entire round is a carbon-copy of this scenario, with boss and bagman working as one. This wasn't, however, Steve Williams and Tiger Woods. Nor was it Jim ''Bones'' Mackay and Phil Mickelson. The caddie was 17-year-old Keith Hinder and his bag for the day is a twenty-something handicapper from Florida.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
The ''late'' signing period for the National Letter of Intent program started April 9 and runs through Aug. 1 which means scholarships often are available to graduating seniors through the summer. The early signing period was one week in November.

College coaches are extremely busy this time of year with conference, regional and national championships being held from mid-April to June 1, however, they must also focus on recruiting if they did not fill their roster for next fall during the early signing period. Coaches also keep files on underclassmen for subsequent recruiting years, and high school players should be keeping good records of competitive rounds to build their resumes. If you are not sure how to write a resume for a college golf coach, see the examples in the Ping American College Golf Guide.

Letters of intent are sent by schools to student-athletes outlining the obligations of the institution including the scholarship offer and the letter also states the obligations of the student. It is a binding contract, so read it carefully before signing.
