TOURNAMENT RECAPS Philip Michael Giammaresi, 16, of Tampa, Fla., carded a
7-over-par 77 May 12 in the final round of the AJGA Preseason Junior at
Gainesville to take medalist honors. He finished with a 2-over-par 142 and
a four-stroke victory.
''I knew today's round would not be as good as yesterday's from the
start,'' said Giammaresi who opened with a 5-under-par 65. ''I was not
trying to be aggressive.''
Noah Goldman of Longwood, Fla., who had a final-round 76,
finished at 6-over 146. * International Junior Golf Tour: Sierra Nevada Junior Classic
Brian Ward of Lodi, Calif., and Caitlin Munroe of
Lakehead, Calif., captured the boys and girls titles, respectively, at the
International Junior Golf Tour's Sierra Nevada Junior Classic May 12 on
the Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch in Genoa, Nev.
Ward posted a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish with a two-day
147 total and claim top honors in the boys 16-19 division. Bruce
Leong of San Mateo, Calif., carded back-to-back 76s for second.
In the girls 15-19 division, Monroe posted a final-round 75 giving her
a two-day total of 163 and top honors by five strokes. Alexis
Edwards of Oakley, Calif., shot 168 to finish second. * International Junior Golf Tour: Lake George Junior Championship
Adam Cohn of Binghamton, N.Y., followed his first-round 73 with
76 May 12 giving him a 149 total, and a four-stroke victory in the boys
16-19 division, at the cold and rainy Lake George Junior Championship,
played at the Sagamore Golf Course in Bolton Landing, N.Y. Daniel
Levy of Rydal, Pa., and Patrick Kelly of Garden City, N.Y.,
shot 71 and 75, respectively for 153s and a share of second.
Alysse Sweeney of Wayne, N.J., followed her opening-round 81
with a final-round 78 for a one-stroke victory in the girls 15-19
division. Catherine Fortin of Beauceville, Ontario, shot a
final-round 74 for a 160-tournament total to finish second. |

NEWS AND
NOTES Pressel, 13, shot a 1-over 73 at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club
May 14 and advanced to sectional qualifying next month.
This is the first year of local qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open,
and Pressel, who made it last year as a 12-year-old when there was just
one stage, was privately pointed to as one of the reasons for the change.

* Andrew Dawson has joined Cleveland Golf as Player Development
Representative. Mike Dunphy, who is the Player Development Manager,
has hired Dawson to help expand Cleveland's coverage of junior golf and
the developmental tours. "Among other things, Andy brings impeccable
player relationships to the table," said Dunphy. Dawson comes to Cleveland
Golf from Texas where he was most recently the assistant men's golf coach
at Texas A&M University. Dawson's experience also includes time spent
working with the American Junior Golf Association.
* May 7 was "Liz Janangelo Day in Connecticut," as proclaimed by
Gov. John Rowland during her visit to the state Capitol. Janangelo, winner
of a record five consecutive Connecticut State Women's Amateur titles and
ranked No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, was recognized for her
athletic, community and academic accomplishments. The senior at
Conard-West Hartford will attend Duke this fall on a golf scholarship.
* Short shots: McKinney's Brittany Lane, ranked No. 4,
shot even 71 at the Roy Kizer Golf Course to win the Texas girls' Class 5A
state individual championship by one stroke May 10. In 5A boys action,
Jeff Bell, ranked No. 31, of Plano West won the individual title
thanks to a final-round, 2-under 69. Camille Blackerby of
Breckenridge, who won a four-way playoff, shot a two-day total of 13-over
157 to win the Texas Class 3A at the par-72 Jimmy Clay Golf Course May 10
in Austin, Texas, while Trey Todd, ranked No. 203, shot a 2-over
146 to win the boys title. . . . Jeff Golden, 17, scored a
hole-in-one May 5 at the Central Florida Junior Golf Tour event at
Kissimmee (Fla.) Bay Country Club. Golden used a 7-iron on the 135-yard,
par-3 13th hole. . . . The USGA granted $14,000 to Charlotte (N.C.) Metro
Junior Golf Association. . . . The Central Texas Junior Golf Association
is playing host to the Stableford Junior Golf Classic June 2 at ! Su!
ndance Golf Course in New Braunfels, Texas. The event begins at 2 p.m. and
the fee to participate is $10. This competition is open to all juniors who
have competed in the 18-hole division of tournaments.

WATCH ''My dad and I started playing golf together and I liked it, so I kept
on doing it.''
Plyler, the runner-up in the 2001 Carolina Golf Association Junior
match play, enjoys golf because, ''I like the competition and golf is such
an honorable sport.''
Other than golf, Plyler enjoys shopping, hanging out with her friends
and school work.
If Plyler could attend any professional event, she would like to go to
the Masters.
Her favorite PGA Tour player is Phil Mickelson, ''I like him
because he is so cute and he is a great role model.''
