TOURNAMENT RECAPS
* Future Collegians World Tour: At the FCWT Hiawatha Junior Shootout, local-product Dan Gabel shot a final-round 71 at The Links course in Apalachin, N.Y., to win by one shot over Scott Comer. Gabel finished the three-day event at 4-over-par 220.

* International Junior Golf Tour: In the IJGT Pacific Coast Junior Challenge, Ted Whitney was one of only two golfers in the field to break 70 during the two-day event at the Sandpines Golf Club in Florence, Ore.

Whitney backed an opening-round 69 with 72 for 141, four shots lower than Colin Tucker and Blake Field. Field, meanwhile, was the other player to break 70, as he followed an opening-day 76 with 69 to finish at 145.

* In Brewster, Mass., Louis-Pierre Godin made a final-round charge to take the IJGT Cape Cod Junior Golf Challenge. Godin followed rounds of 79-79 with a 1-under 71 to end the tournament with a one-shot victory over Charles-Etienne Seguin. While Godin saved his charge for the late stages of the event, Seguin moved backward on Day 3 -- he was eight shots ahead of Godin at the beginning of play, but soared to a final-round 80 over the Ocean Course at the Ocean Edge Golf Resort.

* American Junior Golf Association: Finally, Mitchell McCaughan shot the lowest score of the week in Junior golf, as the Sumner, Wash., resident shot a 4-under 68 at the MeadowWood Golf Course to tie for first at the AJGA Preseason Junior.

Mitchell shared the top spot at even 144 with Nicholas Grigsby and Jason Williams. Meanwhile, Jason Diamond, Daniel Brutocao and Denny Bae all ended one shot behind to further their hopes of gaining full-time access to the 2002 season.

HOGGARD: TAKE STEPS NOW
FOR STARS OF TOMORROW

On the eve of the American Junior Golf Association's 2001 Preseason Junior at Diablo Grande, Spencer Levin was scarcely a blip on the national junior radar. Thirty-six holes and 144 strokes later the Elk Grove, Calif., native changed all that.

While Levin's ascent from state prodigy to national heavyweight was the feel-good story of the summer, his climb also demonstrates everything that is right with the AJGA and during a recent interview with Peter Ripa, the Braselton, Ga.-based association's chief operations officer, Levin's name, and story, was dropped more than once.

NEWS AND NOTES
* Rafael Cabrera, a 17-year-old Spanish amateur ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, thrilled the home spectators at the Spanish Open April 28 when he was paired with Sergio Garcia in the final group.

The runner-up in last year's British Boys Championship at Ganton equaled the best showing by an amateur in an official PGA European Tour event, finishing tied for fourth. Other amateurs who have tied for fourth in European Tour events are Gary Hallberg (1977 Scandinavian Enterprise Open), Gordon Sherry (1995 Scottish Open) and Justin Rose (1998 British Open).

Some are calling Cabrera the next Garcia, who, incidentally won the Spanish Open by four strokes.

* Golf 20/20 announced April 24 that JuniorLinks.com has relaunched, with new content for the summer junior golf season, including a searchable database of 550 of the nation's junior golf programs. The programs range from camps and tournaments to year-round events. Program directors can continue to register on the Web site to add to its growing database, and parents and juniors can search for a program that best suits their needs.

Other new content on JuniorLinks.com includes college scholarship information, tips from golf professionals and sports psychologists, as well as information on equipment. Resources for program directors include information on fund-raising, starting programs and organizing tournaments, in addition to opportunities to share "best practices" on topics such as obtaining course access, soliciting volunteers, and recruiting and retaining new players.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. There is no set time for high school student-athletes to register, but the best time is after your junior year grades are posted to your transcript. After graduation and before the school closes for the summer, your school also must send the Clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript confirming graduation from high school.

Registration materials are inserted into the NCAA printed ''Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete'' or may be obtained by calling the Clearinghouse at 319-337-1492. The NCAA also has a toll-free hot line 800-638-3731 to answer eligibility questions.
