TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* Scott Robertson Memorial

Paula Creamer had a busy week.

The No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Performance Index started May 12 in Naples, Fla., when she advanced to the final stage of qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open and capped her whirlwind week with her second consecutive Scott Robertson Memorial title May 18.

The 16-year-old, who tied for 71st in her LPGA debut in South Carolina earlier this month, was among 28 players at the local qualifier in Naples to advance to sectionals before heading to Roanoke, Va., and the Scott Robertson.

She opened with rounds of 66-75 before inclement weather shortened the final round to nine holes. Her 37 was good for a three-shot victory over U.S. Girls' Junior champion and second-ranked In-Bee Park, Nicole Hage and Taylor Leon.

Chad Wilcox made par at the first playoff hole to defeat Jarred Texter and win his first Golfweek/Titleist ranked event of the season at the Scott Robertson.

Wilcox, who moved to No. 89 in the rankings and is headed to Wake Forest in the fall, opened with 68 and had a final-round 71, while Texter, stroke-play co-medalist at the '02 U.S. Junior, had rounds of 70-69 for a 139 total. Kenny Kim (68) finished in third at 141 after a final-round 73.

* IJGT event at Pumpkin Ridge

At the International Junior Golf Tour's event at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Ore., Marissa Patterson came from three strokes back May 18 to win the girls division by one shot over Molly Edmunds.

Following her first-round 84 on the Ghost Creek course, Patterson shot a tournament-best 79 for a 163 total. Patterson's victory moves her to No. 131 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings. Edmunds had rounds of 81-83 while Sydney Roughton finished third at 171.

HOGGARD: WIE BIT OF ADVICE,
TEEN SHOULD SAVOR YOUTH

The early-morning phone call was as unexpected as it was baffling. ''Michelle Wie. Is she the best 13-year-old in the nation . . . male or female?'' the colleague asked.

The colleague, of course, was caught up in the vortex that had been created by Wie's announcement last week she will play the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open in September.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Arnold Palmer will play this year's Office Depot Father/Son Challenge for the first time with his 15-year-old grandson Sam Saunders.

''I have watched the event for years and have envied the fathers who get to compete with their sons. Now I will have a chance to play with my grandson,'' Palmer said, who will play the event Dec. 3-7 at ChampionsGate Golf Resort near Orlando, Fla.

''(Saunders) is playing so well right now. It's awesome to watch him hit the ball.''

Saunders, who is the oldest of Palmer's seven grandchildren, is a scratch golfer and the current club champion at Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge.

* Tom Watson won the 2003 Card Walker Award for his work promoting golf among young people.

''We have a lot of tour players involved in junior golf,'' PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said May 14 at the award ceremony. ''But Tom has for years and years been a leader in the idea of bringing golf to kids and bringing kids to golf.''

Named in honor of the former chairman of the executive committee of Walt Disney Productions, the Walker Award is given each year to a person who ''makes significant contributions in support of junior golf.''

* The New Jersey PGA Section will conduct the inaugural 24-Hour Golf Marathon June 13-14 at Fairway Golf Center in Piscataway. This event -- which will include free lessons from section pros, a par-3 contest and putting competitions -- was designed to attract junior golfers and will feature a complimentary gift to all participants under 15.

* Short shots: Teen-ager Michelle Wie has accepted a sponsor exemption to play in the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open, becoming the first female to compete on the PGA Tour's developmental circuit. Wie already will have experience by the time she gets to the Boise Open. She also has been invited to play in the Canadian Tour's Bay Mills Open Players' Championship Aug. 21-24 in Brimley, Mich. . . . The Florida Junior Invitational will be held July 2-6 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills. For more information, call 352-324-2024 (extension 7274) or e-mail golf@missoninnresort.com. . . . Brandon Christianson, 17, shot 10-under-par 62 and broke the Valencia High record and tied the course record May 12 at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai, Calif. According to Bob Thomas of the Southern California Golf Association, the round is the lowest in competition by a high school player in Southern California. Henr! y Liaw, the 2001 U.S. Junior champion, shot 58 at par-70 Alhambra Golf Club in 1998. Liaw, however, was 12 at the time and not in high school, Thomas said. Christianson's shot at 59 was derailed at No. 18 when he had to lay-up with his second shot after a poor drive and three-putted for his only bogey of the round. Christianson will play for UCLA in the fall.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Teddy Collins
Age: 17
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: Not Ranked (Only played two events)
Residence: Louisville, Ky.
The Skinny: Collins won the IJGT event at Hershey Golf Club's East Course May 11, where he overcame a six-stoke deficit in the final round with a closing 63.

Collins, who hit all 18 greens in regulation during his round, would have set the East Course record had it been played from an additional 350 yards. The East Course is site of the Nationwide Tour's annual Reese's Cup Classic and regularly ranks one of the circuit's toughest.

Collins, runner-up at last year's Kentucky State High School Championship, is a member of the National Honors Society and a four-time academic all-state selectee.
