TOURNAMENT RECAPS
AJGA Thunderbird International: It was a Washington sweep as Ryan Moore of Puyallup shot three consecutive rounds in the 60s to take the boys division and Lani Elston of Spokane won the girls division May 28 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The same duo also took their respective titles last week at the Washington State 4A High School Championships.

Moore, 18, led wire-to-wire, shooting 67-67-68 for a 14-under-par 202 total. His victory moved him to No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Anthony Kim of La Quinta, Calif., finished three back and 2000 champion Chan Song Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., finished third. Elson, 18, won her first AJGA event shooting 74-72-73 for a 219. One stroke back was Aimee Cho of Orlando, Fla.

IJGT Tournament of Champions: After posting rounds of 69-68, Blaine Peffley of Lebanon, Pa., carried a three-shot lead into the May 28 final round over Brice Bailey of Memphis, Tenn. Lightning forced the final round to be shortened to nine-holes. Peffley shot 35 to finish the event at 8-under at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Jessica Lovell of Birmingham, Ala., defeated Tara Chappell of Carmel, Calif., by five to claim the girls division. Lovell shot rounds of 74-73-37 to finish at 184.

Teens on the Green: Harold Villere III, a 17-year-old from New Orleans, won the 15-and-over boys division, shooting 70-75 for a 1-over par 145 May 28 at Doral Golf Resort in Miami. Villere will attend Jackson State in the fall.

In the 15-and-over girls division, Lauren Brown won a playoff over Tiffany Rogers. Brown shot rounds of 84-82 for a 166 total. Cheyenne Woods, TigerĘs niece, took second place to Alexia Brown (94-87ū181) in the 10-12 year-old girls division.

Teens on the GreenĘs mission is to provide minority juniors age 10-17 with handicaps of 12-or-less with the opportunity of lessons and playing time at upscale courses, while focusing on academic scholarship for kids to move on to collegiate golf.

This year, 127 African-, Asian- Hispanic- and Native-American juniors fielded teams from 15 U.S. regions and the Bahamas, up from 27 kids and three cities in its inaugural year.

NEWS AND NOTES
* Perry Swenson played in three tournaments (12 rounds) in an 11-day span starting with the Scott Robertson Memorial, which began May 18, and ending with the AJGA Thunderbird International, which concluded May 28. Between the two events, Swenson, 18, played in the WomenĘs Southern Amateur at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., losing 1-up in the 36-hole championship to Robin Burke. Immediately following tournament festivities, Swenson of Charlotte, N.C., jumped on a plane and headed west, arriving in Phoenix at 2 a.m., May 26. She finished tied for eighth, second and tied for 19th respectively.

* Brett Bergeron, a 17-year-old junior at Riverside Academy in New Orleans, May 21 became the youngest winner of the MenĘs Metropolitan Amateur Golf Championship on the Teeth of the Gator course at The Golf Club of New Orleans. He won by four shots over four others and shot a 54-hole total of 217 (74-72-71).

* Ty Tryon of Orlando, Fla., missed the cut in the Japan Golf TourĘs Diamond Cup May 25 played at Oarai (Japan) Golf Club. The 16-year-old shot 75-73 to miss playing on the weekend by three.

* The Pizza Hut Southern Junior has changed its name to the 38th Annual Cleveland Golf/Joe Durant Southern Junior. The event will be played June 25-28 at Hidden Creek Country Club in Navarre, Fla.

Name: Gregory Bondarenko
Age: 17
Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 22nd
Residence: Moscow, Russia
The Skinny: Bondarenko has had a crazy year so far and has enjoyed every moment of it. This year he has played in tournaments in Austria, England, Spain and the United States.

In his two tournament starts in the United States he finished tied for 16th at the Scott Robertson Memorial May 20 and followed that with an eighth-place tie at the AJGA Thunderbird International May 28.

As for his tournament schedule for the remainder of the year, he said: ōItĘs not my job. My mom tells me what is next.ö

His thoughts on golf in the United States: ōI like it here. First of all, itĘs warm. I also like the courses very much.ö
