TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* FCWT Eastern Regional, Lake Nona, Orlando, Fla.

Michael Young closed with steady rounds of 73-73 to win the FCWT Eastern Regional tournament May 4 at Lake Nona Club in Orlando, Fla.

Despite his balanced finish, however, Young was tested by Weston Way and Tommy Rymer in the final round.

Although he started the day a stroke ahead of Way and Rymer, by the time Young started his second nine he was five shots behind Rymer.

After a front-nine 33, Rymer was 5 under for the tournament with six holes to play but Young cut that lead to two before they reached the 18th. Rymer -- who is bound for the University of Texas this fall -- made double bogey on the final hole to finish a shot behind Young at 217 while Way was another stroke back in third place.

Young, who is heading to the University of North Florida, credited "controlling his iron shots to the firm and fast greens'' as the key to his victory.

* FCWT Central Regional, MSU, E. Lansing, Mich.

Jeff Kaiser birdied his last two holes May 4 to edge Ryan Linton by a stroke at the FCWT Central Regional tournament. Kaiser shot a final-round 74 at Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich., to finish at 5-over 221.

The victory gave Kaiser his first triumph of the season and an invitation to the National Championship at Miami's Doral Resort.

Linton's closing 72 was good for second place at 222 while Chad Koschmann finished third at 223.

* FCWT Western Regional, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M.

Blake Trimble took charge of the FCWT Western Regional tournament with an opening 3-under 69 and never let up. The 16-year-old won the title May 4 at the University of New Mexico Golf Course in Albuquerque, finishing nine shots ahead of his nearest challenger.

Trimble had rounds of 69-70-76 for a 1-under 215 total. "I hit a lot of good iron shots and putted very well both days," Blake said. "I hadn't been playing well for several weeks leading up to this event, so I figured I was due to score well."

Zach Fullerton, Carl Smith and Pat Strandemo finished in a three-way tie for second at 224.

FROM THE CART PATH:
KEYS TO BEATING BURNOUT

Today's competitive junior golf season can be a 12-month, national tour. It is not uncommon for high school-age players to compete in 20 or more events a year. Tiger Woods played 18 PGA Tour events last year, but Woods didn't have to go to school.

Coaches encourage juniors to get lots of competition and learn to play under pressure. But overplaying and excessive pressure can lead to burnout. The parent plays a key role in finding the crucial balance. The junior may not recognize the signs of burnout so the parent may be the only person in a player's life to make the critical diagnosis and take steps to avoid major problems caused by burnout.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
It is important to ask questions during campus/recruiting visits, but recruits should try to include the questions as part of normal conversation and not an interrogation. Prospects are being studied as well as doing the studying.

Try to determine from the coach and current team members how practices and qualifying are handled. This time can also be useful in learning how the coach relates to the players.

Former players are another good source of information about a particular coach and program.
