TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* AJGA Southwestern Junior Classic

Derek Tolan's hole-in-one at Isleta Eagle Golf Course's par-3 sixth hole May 30 put the finishing touches on a five-stroke victory at the American Junior Golf Association's Southwestern Junior Classic.

It was Tolan's second consecutive Southwestern Junior victory. He finished at 10-under-par 206 after a closing 70 that included four birdies and the ace.

"It sort of shook me up a little bit, but I birdied the next hole," Tolan said of the hole-in-one. "I finally scored well and that's what I've been struggling to do for a long time."

Will Osborne, whose closing 67 was the day's best round, finished in second place, five shots back at 211.

Amanda Blumenherst shot a 1-under 71 to win the girls division title by two shots.

"It's always nice when you can finish on a good note. I putted well and hit the ball solid and it was just a pretty good round," said Blumenherst, who held off late challenges from Michaela Cavener and Amie Cochran, both of whom finished tied for second at 212.

* AJGA Nike Golf Junior All-Star Classic at Jacksonville

Kevin O'Connell shot a final-round, 1-under 70 for a 212 total to win the AJGA Nike Golf Junior All-Star Classic May 30 in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

O'Connell's final round included three birdies and the Raleigh N.C., resident finished four strokes ahead of Patrick Rada of Anderson, S.C.

Jacqui Concolino from Orlando Fla., won the girls division by a stroke over Vicki Yi. Concolino led Yi by one shot entering the final round and both closed with 72s,

"I loved playing with Vicki,'' Concolino, 15, said. "I had two nerve-wracking putts, one on 14 for par and one on 16 for birdie, but I kept my focus for both and knocked them in."

HOGGARD: RIGHT COACH KEY
TO FINDING RIGHT SCHOOL

Of the 30 coaches assembled at last week's NCAA Division I Men's Championship only two, Clemson's Larry Penley and Oklahoma State's Mike Holder, have made the annual championship something of a rite of spring.

Since Penley arrived at Clemson in 1984 he's guided the Tigers to 20 consecutive NCAA appearances. Holder's NCAA resume is even more mind-boggling. There have been 30 trips to the final since Holder rode into Stillwater in 1974 with eight team titles and just three finishes outside the top 10.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Sandwiched between a U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifying event and the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, and just before she gets into the heart of her whirlwind, 10-event summer schedule, Michelle Wie will try her hand at an altogether different challenge -- the scariest amusement park rides Universal Studios has to offer.

Wie, the 13-year-old who tied for ninth at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in March and is scheduled to become the first female to play a Nationwide Tour event later this year, arrived in Central Florida May 31 and planned to spend time with swing coach Gary Gilchrist at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Fla., before playing the Women's Open qualifier June 9 at the Country Club of Heathrow (Fla.).

Wie will be paired with Paula Creamer, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, at Heathrow.

''It's going to be very interesting,'' said Creamer, who has played in one tournament ('02 U.S. Girls' Junior) with Wie. ''When I saw my pairing I was thrilled. I think it will be a good experience to play with her. I have heard so much about her.''

* Paula Creamer has accepted a sponsor exemption into the Wegman's Rochester LPGA in June.

''I am really looking forward to it and it should be fun,'' Creamer said June 2. ''I have already experienced an LPGA event once, I know what to expect and I am really excited.''

Creamer, who tied for 71st in her LPGA debut in May at the Asahi Ryokuken International Championship, has won six of the eight ranked junior events she has played this season.

''Our fans want to see the best players out here from amateurs to professional,'' said Linda Hampton, Wegman's Rochester tournament coordinator. ''She is the top-ranked junior in the country and we were very excited that she is available.''

* Tom Glissmeyer, 16, of Colorado Springs, Colo., birdied his final hole June 2 at Columbine Country Club for a 3-under 141 total and a spot in the U.S. Open next week at Olympia Fields.

Glissmeyer, No. 98 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, is a long-time local rival of Derek Tolan, ranked No. 51, who qualified last year for the U.S. Open at the age of 16 at the Littleton, Colo., sectional site.

* Short shots: Fifth-ranked Carmen Alonso finished tied for 18th at the Ladies European Tour's Spanish Women's Open June 1. Alonso had rounds of 74-75-72-70 for a 3-over 291 total. . . . No. 42 Luke List shot back-to-back 68s June 3 to qualify for the U.S. Open. List took medalist honors at the sectional qualifier at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Marissa Patterson
Age: 17
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 156th (as of June 1)
Residence: San Clemente, Calif.
The Skinny: Patterson won once in 2002-03 and recorded 11 other top-10 finishes to claim the International Junior Golf Tour's merit points award.

The 17-year-old started playing golf six years ago and began competitively playing 2 1/2 years ago.

''My dad started playing golf and I wanted to drive in the golf cart, so I decided to pick up a club and hit golf balls,'' Patterson said.

Patterson, whose golf heroes include Sam Snead and ''my all-time favorite'' Phil Mickelson, said the strength of her game is her short irons.

The former softball player enjoys playing different sports when not on the course and the high school junior is looking forward to college.

''I want to go to a four-year university, hopefully on a full-ride scholarship,'' Patterson said. ''I want to earn my doctorate degree somewhere in the medical field. I hope to also play golf during my college days.''

This summer, Patterson plans to play an AJGA event and the IJGT's North America Cup.
