TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* Bubba Conlee National Junior

Will Dottley and Beck Troutman are making a habit out of clashing in the final round of the Bubba Conlee Invitational. On June 5, for the second consecutive year, the two vied for the boys division title and, like last year at Cherokee Valley Golf Club, Dottley prevailed.

Dottley shot a closing 6-under 66 for a 200 total while Troutman finished second at 204. Gator Todd, Andrew Temple and Amrith De Soysa tied for third, nine strokes behind Dottley.

Marci Turner captured the girls division title with a 221 total. Turner, who shot a final-round 73, held off last year's runner-up Amanda Mathis and Taylor Bunnell, who both finished one shot back. Bunnell went into Day 3 tied for the lead, but struggled to a closing 74.

* Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship

Will Osborne and Charlie Holland were steady throughout a windy, rainy final round at the Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship. A closing 1-under 70 propelled the duo past the three teams that began the day ahead of them. Michael Randle and Jeff Gerlich were second, two shots back.

"We birdied five and six which got us going pretty good," Holland said. "We just thought we played good on the back nine all week and thought we could do it again."

The pair put the finishing touches on their come-from-behind victory with a closing-nine 34.

Randle and Gerlich finished alone in second place after a final-round 74. Tyler and Trent Leon made a charge as well, carding an even-par 71 to finish in a tied for third with Ryan Henry and Zac Reynolds.

* AJGA Carolina Junior Championship

Warren Thomas shot a final-round, 4-under-par 68 to win the AJGA Dunlop Carolina Junior Championship. Thomas finished with a 2-under 214 total, one shot ahead of Eddie Brock Jr.

"Right now, I am shocked," said 17-year-old Thomas, who opened with rounds of 75-71. "I hit some solid iron shots and I was close all day with my putter. After yesterday's round, I worked for two hours on my putting stroke. The work paid off well for me."

* Nike Golf Junior All-Star Classic at Ames

Mu Hu calmly birdied the first playoff hole June 5 to defeat Mark Jones and win the AJGA Nike Golf Junior All-Star Classic at Ames (Iowa) at Memorial Golf Club.

Hu, who had rounds of 69-72-73, finished 54 holes tied with Jones at 214. At the first extra hole, the par-5 18th, Hu hit 3-wood from 250 yards to 15 feet for a two-putt birdie and the title.

"Today my strength was putting under pressure," Hu said. "I sunk two 6-foot, left-to-right downhill putts."

Rounding out the top four in the boys division were Jonathan Khan (73-72-72-217) and Arnond Vongvanij (77-74-69-220). In a tie for fifth were Adam Hogue (76-72-73-221) and Philip Francis (72-71-78-221).

* Ping/Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup

Jake Hermes holed a dramatic, 30-footer for birdie at the 54th hole of the Ping/Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup to force a playoff. In overtime, however, Hermes didn't need any heroics on his way to victory June 5 at Walking Stick Golf Club in Pueblo, Colo.

Hermes, trailing Derek Tolan and Geoff Mead by one shot through 53 holes, followed his dramatic birdie at No. 18 with a routine par on the first extra hole to defeat Mead, who bogeyed the playoff hole.

Mead, who got up-and-down at the 18th hole in regulation for a final-round 74 and a spot in the playoff, and Hermes (72) finished tied at 217. Tolan (76) failed to make the playoff when he three-putted from 70 feet at No. 18 for a 218 total.

"I like being in the final group and watching what the other guys are doing," Hermes said. "It was great for me to feed off of Derek and Geoff."

* BMO Financial Group Future Links Prairie Championship

Patrik Ericson became the first player to win the BMO Financial Group Future Links Prairie Championship in three consecutive years. Ericson's victory June 4 at Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, also made him the third player in Future Links history to win at least three titles.

The 18-year-old closed with 71 for a 215 total, five shots head of Michael Keast. Ericson joins Eom-Ji Park (four Junior Girls titles) and Dustin Zhang (three bantam boys titles) as the only three-time winners on the Canadian circuit.

In the junior girls division, Stacey Bieber went wire-to-wire to claim her first Future Links title. The 18-year-old shot a final-day 78 for a nine-shot victory. Elizabeth Reid was second at 244 while Dayna Kopp finished third at 247.

* PGA Junior Series: The Bear Trace at Tims Ford

In his first PGA Junior Series event, Peter Malnati survived a one-hole playoff June 4 to win the boys 16-17 division at Bear Trace at Tims Ford in Winchester, Tenn. Malnati shot rounds of 74-71-71 to match Phillip Bryan's (72-75-69) 216 total.

Jimmy Markovitz (71-73-72--216) also needed extra holes to defeat Ryan Kelley (70-74-72--216) and claim the boys 13-15 division crown. After both players birdied the first playoff hole, Markovitz birdied the second extra hole to defeat Kelley.

Sixteen-year-old Lauren Mielbrecht came from behind to claim top honors in the girls 16-17 division. Mielbrecht, who shot a final-round 75 for a 222 total and one-stroke victory, began the day trailing co-leaders Ashley Freeman and Sara Brown.

Emily Powers, the defending girls 13-15 PGA Junior of the Year, cruised to a 23-stroke victory in the 13-15 girls division. Powers had rounds of 73-73-75 for a 221 total.

ELLIOTT: IMPROVEMENT
AWAITS AT NEXT LEVEL

Johnstown, Pa.
Attention junior golfers: This summer take some time off from junior golf and tee it up against players two and three times your age.

While at the Sunnehanna Amateur, one of the nation's top amateur tournaments, it became clear that many top junior players can compete against, and beat, their older and more seasoned counterparts.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Thirteen-year-old Michelle Wie doesn't meet her peers very often in competition. At a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open June 9, however, Wie spent 36 holes getting acquainted with the best junior golf has to offer -- 16-year-old Paula Creamer.

Creamer, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, carded a pair of 72s at the par-71, 6,541-yard Country Club at Heathrow. Her 2-over 144 performance put her one shot behind the tournament's medalist, 17-year-old Aree Song (72-71).

''It's definitely a relief,'' said Creamer, whose performance earned her a trip to Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in July to play the Women's Open. ''It was one of my main goals, AJGA Player of the Year and to make the Open.''

* Chicago, the Cubs, Lake Shore Drive and one of the best junior golf towns in the United States. As the spotlight shifts to this week's U.S. Open at Olympia Fields on Chicago's south side, the area's top programs are being honored for their success.

On Monday, the U.S. Golf Association hosted 500 area at-risk youths and individuals with disabilities for Junior Day at the U.S. Open. Last year, the USGA awarded $120,000 to 22 Chicago area junior programs, including the Chicago District Golf Foundation's initiative for disabled children and the ABJ Community Services junior golf program for at-risk youths.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Arturo Segura
Age: 13
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: Not Ranked (as of June 11)
Residence: Celaya, Mexico
The Skinny: Segura, who began playing golf when he was 10, finished second on the International Junior Golf Tour's merit point list for boys ages 11-12 this season.

Segura, whose sports heroes range from Tiger Woods to Pele, began playing golf when, ''some friends took me to play one day in Mexico and I enjoyed it a lot.''

While his favorite course is TPC at Sawgrass, Segura's proudest golf memory occurred when he shot 6-under 66 at a course in Irapuato, a city located in Central Mexico near his hometown of Celaya.

He enjoys playing soccer during his time away from golf and he has a simple game plan for the summer: ''I am going back home to Mexico and going to the beach.''
