TOURNAMENT RECAPS
* AJGA Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek
Cornelius Carroll claimed his first AJGA victory after shooting
a final-round 71 June 19 while Morgan Pressel had a 1-over 73 to
win the girls division at the AJGA Buick Junior Open presented by
Golfweek.
Carroll's even-par 216 total at Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden,
Mich., was two shots clear of Clark Klaasen.
''It feels good,'' Carroll, 16, said. ''I've had a lousy season so far.
I've been in the middle or top third all year.''
Pressel led the girls division from the start with rounds of 72-68-73
for a 213 total. Pressel, 15, started the round with an eagle on the par-5
second and was never challenged.
''I played solid and consistent,'' Pressel said. ''That's what is
important. It's exciting to win.''
Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana finished 12 shots back at 225.
Amber Prange placed third at 227. * AJGA Sprint Junior Golf Championship
Erik Flores edged Brett Kanda in a playoff June 19 after
both players finished 54 holes tied at 5-under 211 at the AJGA Sprint
Junior Golf Championship.
Flores' closing 75 included five bogeys and two birdies. He opened with
rounds of 71 and 65 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
''I played just as good as I did yesterday when I shot 65,'' Flores
said. ''But the wind was brutal today and I struggled to finish my
up-and-downs.''
Flores clinched his second-career AJGA victory with a par on the first
playoff hole.
Erik Coover, Derek Sipe and Polo Golf Junior All-American
Chad Wilcox tied for third at 3-under 213.
Jennie Lee, a 2002 Polo Golf Junior All-American, took top
honors in the girls division at 3 over. Tiffany Joh finished two
shots back at 220 while Esther Choe finished third at 222. * AJGA Henry-Grifitts Bluegrass Junior Invitational
Chanin Puntawong birdied his final hole June 20 to avoid a
playoff and win the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Bluegrass Junior Invitational
June 20.
Puntawong finished at 208 followed by Jarred Texter and Matthew
Scykowski at 209.
Whitney Wade won her second consecutive Henry-Griffitts title,
finishing at 217 for a six-stroke victory.
Wade, who recently qualified to play next week's U.S. Women's Open,
closed with 71 at Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland, Ky.
''I tried to make par on each hole and not worry about what other
players were doing,'' said Wade, a 17-year-old first-team Polo Golf Junior
All-American. ''It is special to win this tournament because I am from the
area.''
Marci Turner, the 2001 Bluegrass Junior champion, finished at
221 and Brittany Lincicome placed third, two shots back. * AJGA PING Harvey Penick Junior
Michael Randle rallied from five shots back with a final-round
69 June 19 to win the AJGA PING Harvey Penick Junior.
Randle, who began the tournament with back-to-back 73s, finished at
215, two shots ahead of second-round leader Creighton Honeck.
''I felt like the first two rounds I kind of left some out there,''
Randle said. ''I was really focusing on taking it as deep as possible
today, and I was able to play my best.''
Honeck finished with 76 at Hills Country Club in Austin, Texas, and
tied for second with three other players -- Jace Moore, Raul
Lemus and Lance Lopez - at 217.
Ashley Rollins shot her second consecutive 74 to hold off a late
challenge from Lauren Espinosa to win the girls division.
''I've had kind of a slow year this year and haven't done as well as I
would have liked. So this means a lot,'' said Rollins, who finished at
217.
Espinosa finished two shots back at 219. Alejandra Llaneza and Mallorie
Underwood tied for third at 226.
Rollins, who will play her college golf at the University of New Mexico
in the fall, said the PING Harvey Penick Junior was her last scheduled
AJGA event. * World Junior Team Championship
After trailing by as much as six shots after Day 1, Korea overcame
Japan June 19 to win the World Junior Team Championship at the Rosewood
Club in Kobe, Japan.
The Korean squad finished the four-day event at 4-over 868, two strokes
ahead of Japan, that led in each of the first three rounds. Despite losing
the team title, however, Japan's Yuta Ikeda overcame a five-shot
deficit to win individual honors.
The United States finished tied for fourth-place with Canada. Greg
Rodgers was the top American, tying for 10th. * Signal Mountain Invitational
Robert Gates Jr. finished at 205 to win the Signal Mountain
(Tenn.) Invitational June 19 while Rachel Smith won the girls
division.
Gates shot 69 in his final round to hold off Peter Malnati, who
closed with 68. Malnati finished two-shots back, with a 205 total.
Gates shot a tournament-low 66 in his second round that propelled him
into the lead.
Smith (225) shot a third-round 74 to secure her victory. Catherine
Hicks and second-round leader Beth Felts finished tied for
second, four shots back. * Pepsi Little Peoples
Bobby West, Jennie Arsenault and Carly Truitt

players finished at even-par 144. Colin Wilcox finished in third
place, one stroke back.
Truitt shot a second-round 69 for an even-par 142 total. Alejandra
Diaz-Calderon was second, two strokes back.
Arsenault won the girls 14-15 year old division over Anita Gahir
in a playoff. Both players finished tied at 150. Jamie Harlan was third.
* World Junior Golf Cup
Mark Long won the boys 17-18 division at the World Junior Golf
Cup June 20 at Walt Disney World Resort's Magnolia Course in Orlando, Fla.
Despite a third-round d 75, Long cruised to a three-stroke victory over
Kyle Thurston and Ricky Hayes. Byron Gustus and
Andrew Hrwynak rounded out the top five.
Eddie Brock won the boys 15-16 division after rounds of 70-69.
Ryan Solan and Luigi Spadafora finished six strokes behind
Brock. * PGA Junior Series at The Woodlands, Texas
Phillip Bryan took medallist honors June 19 in the boys 16-17
division at the Callaway PGA Junior Series event at The Woodlands, Texas.
Of the four division winners at The Woodlands, Bryan was the only
champion from outside Texas. He began the final round trailing Ryan
Smith by four strokes but shot 71 for a 217 total.
Lauren Johnson won the girls 16-17 division. Johnson carded
rounds of 70-74-80--224 to win the tournament by 13 strokes. Following
Johnson in second and third were fellow Texans Lizann Dernick
(77-80-80) and Elizabeth Bond (77-82-79).

Mazur: Ready or Michelle Wie wins the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links
Championship and suddenly golf as we know it may have been transported to
a whole new level. Not amateur golf. Not professional golf. Not women's
golf. Not even the men's game.
Just golf. Plain and simple.
You may like Wie or you may not. That's irrelevant. Reality is the
equalizer here, and it will dictate that this 13-year-old likely will have
the opportunity to do things which could eclipse the feats of even Tiger
Woods. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

NEWS AND NOTES
* For winning the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, Michelle
Wie received a gold medal, the Robert. F. Dwyer Trophy and $300.
The money came from her parents, courtesy of a wager by the
13-year-old. Wie said she made the bet Friday after she advanced to the
quarterfinals.
''My dad was like, 'That's way too much.' He wanted it to be $100,''
Wie told the Associated Press. ''But I stared him down, and we made it
$300.''
B.J. Wie put a different spin on the bet. He said the $300 was
pledged as shopping money while they are on vacation in California after
the U.S. Women's Open.
''If she wins the Women's Open, I'll probably have to give her more
money,'' he said.
* The International Junior Golf Tour is launching a series of junior
tournaments this August in the United Kingdom. The U.K. schedule begins
Aug. 7 at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, and wraps up Aug. 27
at The Belfry in North Warwickshire, England.
* Teeing off in the final round of the South Carolina Junior Golf
Championship with a four-shot lead, Mark Anderson was
understandably a little nervous. But coming down the stretch with a
two-shot lead his nerve endings bristled -- and it had nothing to do with
the golf shots that faced him.
It had to do with the 1,100-pound bull that was resting in the shade of
a live oak in between the 15th and 18th holes at Bulls Bay Golf Club. More
specifically, it had to do with the fact that Anderson, a 17-year-old from
Beaufort, had just been told that if he won the tournament, he had to ride
the bull.
''They told me that on the 15th hole," said the rising senior at
Beaufort Academy. "And I said, 'don't tell me that now.' I'd never ridden
a bull before.''
* Short shots: Sixteen-year-old Paula Creamer, No. 1 in
the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings, made her second cut in as many LPGA
events, shooting 74-73-75-76 to tie for 67th. Creamer tied for 71st at
last month's Asahi Ryokuken International.. . . . North Carolina's
Marshall Pickett, 15, a rising high school junior, became the
youngest player in NGA/Hooters Tour history to make a cut June 20 at the
circuit's Wilmington event. . . . For each adult guest at Hershey (Pa.)
Resort paying a twilight rate on Hershey Golf Club's East Course, a junior
golfer (15 and under) can play for free. Hershey's twilight rate allows
golfers to play as many holes as possible after 4 p.m., with the adult
rate at $60. . . Long Beach State women's coach Sue Ewart announced that
Beth Holtermann (Wasco, Calif.), Bolee Kim (Seoul, South
Korea), Amanda Pentecost (Lakewood, Calif.) and Eloise
Vicencio (Fremont, Calif.) have signed letters of intent for the fall.
Men's coach Bob Livingstone also signed Jeremy Keller (Las
Vegas), Ryan Ritter (Villa Park, Calif.) and Ryan Wood
(Oceanside, Calif.). . . . Zac Hildenbrand (Summerland, British
Columbia) and Colby Lindsay (Abbotsford, British Columbia) have
signed letters of intent to play golf at the University of Texas-El Paso
this fall. . . . Ben Leong of Bradenton, Fla., carded his first
hole-in-one at the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Bluegrass Junior Invitational.
Leong used a pitching wedge at the 31-yard third hole.

PLAYER TO
WATCH At the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, Jun advanced to the
quarterfinals before losing to Aimee Cho, 6 and 4.
Jun lists her most memorable golf experience as the time she made it to
the semifinals in the U.S. Girls' Junior in 2002.
Outside of golf, Jun likes to read, write and collects quotes. She is
heading to UCLA in the fall.

RECRUITING
CENTRAL The plan is designed to increase graduation rates by adding to the
toughened initial-eligibility and progress-towards-degree standards that
were adopted by the NCAA last fall and became effective for
student-athletes entering college in 2003.
''(The plan) rewards programs who exceed their institutional
performance and penalize those at the bottom of their sports group and do
not achieve even their own institutional (graduation) rate,'' said Jim
Delaney, Big Ten Conference commissioner.
