NEWS AND NOTES
ò Jordan PorterÆs first golf experience ended with emergency surgery after a friend accidentally hit him in the head with a golf club. The blow to the head left the 12-year-old from Janesville, Wis., unable to talk for hours June 23. Porter was rushed to Mercy Hospital then was flown to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, where surgeons used 14 titanium screws and a plate to rebuild the right side of his skull. PorterÆs prognosis is good and doctors do not anticipate any long-term effects.

ò In state junior amateur competition: Jean Reynolds won the Georgia Girls Amateur and Taylor Hall won the Georgia Boys Junior; Jeff Spradlin won a playoff to capture the Kansas Junior Amateur; Sean Moore beat Rodney Thomas in 20 holes and Michelle Jarman defeated Jessica Hauser, 5 and 4, to win their respective divisions of the Carolinas Junior Amateur; Alex Brown beat Daryl Chappell, 2 and 1, to win the Virginia Junior Match Play; Jennie Peek won the Colorado Girls Junior Match Play, 3 and 2, over Trisha Quick and Derek OÆNeill won the Colorado Boys Junior.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association took action after hearing details of the case -- the first time a school has been stripped of honors in that fashion. Keosauqua Van Buren, who originally finished third, waas awarded the second-place trophy. Sumner won the title by a shot.

ò Eleven-year-old Michelle WieÆs run at the U.S. WomenÆs Amateur Public Links ended June 22 in the third round when she lost, 1 up, to Allison Johnson. Wie of Honolulu, became the youngest player to qualify for a U.S. Golf Association womenÆs amateur event when she made the field last year, losing in the first round.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
When high school golfers send letters or resumes to coaches hoping to be invited for a recruiting visit, players and parents need to give serious thought to the level of competition at the school. Juniors frequently see scores from college tournaments and think they can shoot the same or better scores.

Coach John Means of the University of Minnesota shares the following thoughts:

ôEvery player on our traveling squad has a plus-handicap and a stroke average of 74 or better. Beware of comparing your summer scores to those of college players however, since college golf is played in the fall and spring in very unusual weather conditions and high winds. Most golf courses are dry in the summer and wet in the spring which makes them play longer than the 7,000 yards we play at. I have heard many, many times from juniors æI can shoot those scores.Æ Scores do not indicate conditions. DonÆt waste your time sending letters to dozens of colleges. Do your homework first.ö
