TOURNAMENT RECAPS

* AJGA Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior

Brendan Gielow secured his first AJGA title June 26, shooting rounds of 67-66-74 for a 207 total, while Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior defending champion Morgan Pressel survived a three-hole playoff to take the girls division title.

''I couldn't get anything going,'' Gielow, 15, said. ''I kept in there though and I am really happy that I played well.''

Ryan Brehm took second, finishing at 209 after rounds of 67-71-71--209 at Roseland Golf & Curling Club in Windsor, Ontario.

Pressel, who finished at 2-over 218 along with Amber Prange, retained her title in a playoff. Pressel recently won the Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek.

''It's great to win,'' the 15-year-old U.S. Women's Open qualifier said. ''It's a good feeling to accomplish my first multi-win year.''

* AJGA Lennar Junior at Mission Hills

Daniel Im rallied on the back nine of his final round June 26 to win the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Im closed with an 8-under 64 to match the tournament 18-hole record and claim the title with a 204 total.

Im, who began the final round four shots back, was at 3 under through 12 holes in the final round when he made is run.

''I went insane after 12,'' Im said. ''I knew I could go lower, so I just focused, relaxed and played my game.''

Im went birdie, par, eagle, birdie, par and birdie to close his round and capture his second AJGA title.

Louie Bishop took second at 207. Second-round leaders Chad Moscovic and Elliott Wainwright finished at 208, tied for third with Garrett Sapp and Aaron Goldberg.

Amie Cochran took top honors in the girls division after defeating Ki-Shui Liao on the second hole of a playoff. Cochran and Liao finished tied at even 216.

Cochran began the final round with a two-stroke lead over Liao and she carded a solid 35 on the front nine but slipped with a four-hole bogey streak on Nos. 13, 14, 15 and 16.

''The back nine was crazy,'' Cochran said. ''I hit the 4-iron of my life on No. 15 and still managed to make bogey. I just couldn't shake it.''

Liao shot 3-under 33 on the back nine to close the gap.

Cochran (74) and Liao (72) parred the first extra hole and Cochran birdied the second playoff hole (No. 16) to take her first AJGA title.

''I practice my putting so hard, and it really paid off this week,'' Cochran said. ''This win is so special for me. I have taken second in enough tournaments.''

* AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree

Trey Todd defeated Zac Reynolds on the first playoff hole June 26 to win the OSSO Junior at Oak Tree.

Throughout the final nine holes Todd and Reynolds traded the lead on Oak Tree Country Club's East Course in Edmond, Okla. The two finished at 6-over 216.

''It was pretty intense,'' Todd said. ''Both of these guys (Reynolds and fourth-place finisher Robby Ormand) are great players. It was tiring, but it was one of the most fun rounds I think I have ever had.''

In the girls division, Ashley Knoll closed with an even-par 70 for a 217 total. The victory was Knoll's third of the 2003 season. She also won the Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship earlier this month and the Thunderbird International Junior in May.

Knoll trailed Lacey Jones by one shot going into the back nine, but climbed into a tie for the lead after making birdie on the par-4 10th. Knoll played bogey-free golf on the back nine for a two-shot victory.

Puntawong secured the victory, his second consecutive triumph, with a closing 65 for a 143 total. He began the final 18 holes five shots behind leaders Gin Kim and James Dickey.

''I had no idea where I stood until I asked a rules official after No. 13,'' Puntawong, 16, said. ''He said the leader was at 7 under par and I knew I needed to play aggressively.''

The leader at that time was Chile's Martin Ureta, who finished in second at 7-under 209.

Julieta Granada out-dueled In-Bee Park in a playoff to win the girls division.

Granada, a second-team Polo Golf Junior All-American, held a three-stroke advantage over Park through 16 holes, but missed a short par putt for the victory in regulation on No. 18.

''I never miss short par putts like that,'' Granada, 16, said. ''If I didn't win in the playoff, I knew I had played my best to get to this point.''

Granada captured the title when Park, the reigning Polo Golf Junior Player of the Year, missed her par putt at the first extra hole.

Mondaca: Caddies not the
key to a junior's success

Having spent time at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship I noticed a very interesting trend. The players who performed the best got little aide from their caddies, or in some instances, they had no caddie at all.

Most of the players in the 144-player field were college players and juniors: Michelle Wie, Stephanie Kono and Hannah Jun were just some of the juniors at Ocean Hammock.

That leads to a very important question: Why are caddies accepted at U.S. Golf Association junior championships?

NEWS AND NOTES

* It has been an impressive two-week stretch for Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas.

The 17-year-old who will attend Duke University this fall, captured her second consecutive major women's amateur tournament with a triumph at the Women's North & South Amateur at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort.

Lang defeated Kristen White, 7 and 6, in the 36-hole final. Lang also won the Women's Western Amateur June 21 at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill.

''It's been pretty exciting,'' Lang said. ''I played pretty well over the past two weeks and I gained a lot of experience playing with the amateur players.''

* Over the last two years, the U.S. Golf Association has committed $350,000 to LPGA-USGA Girls' Golf, which is aimed at increasing the number and diversity of girls who have the opportunity to play the game of golf in a fun environment. At nearly 130 local sites around the country, instructors and volunteers, including parents and USGA representatives, offer education about the game and program support.

According to the USGA, more than 11,000 girls have participated in the program since its inception. The majority of the funding will be distributed to Girls' Golf sites across the country through matching grants designed to provide equipment, instruction and course access.

* Tom Glissmeyer won his second consecutive Colorado State Boys Match Play title June 26 at Meadow Hills Golf Course. Glissmeyer, a 16-year-old who participated in this year's U.S. Open, only is the second player in CGA Boys' Match Play history to win the event twice. Only Davis Love (father of PGA Tour player Davis Love III) won consecutive titles (1953-54) since the inaugural championship in 1951.

* Short shots: Following the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, the captains' picks for this year's Canon Cup will be announced July 14. Currently, 32 players are eligible for the East vs. West showdown.. . . . The UNLV men's golf team signed Sam Hunt (New Zealand) to a letter of intent, coach Dwaine Knight announced June 25. Hunt, 18, joins Matt Edwards of Henderson, Nev., and Andy Leadbetter of Orlando, Fla., in completing the Rebels' 2003 recruiting class.. . .. California women's coach Nancy McDaniel announced the signing of Sofie Andersson, a member of the Swedish national team.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Andrew Yun
Age: 12
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: Not ranked (as of July 2)
Residence: University Place, Wash.
The Skinny: Yun is making a fine junior career out of not caring.

Consider the 12-year-old's philosophy at this year's International Junior Golf Tour's Tournament of Champions.

''I play my best golf when I don't care,'' said Yun, who started tagging along with his father to the golf course because he thought the game looked fun. ''I just play my own game, shot by shot. I did that during my first round at the Tournament of Champions.''

The plan worked. Yun shot an opening 66 and went on to finish fourth in his age division at the IJGT tournament. He also finished in the top 10 on the tour's merit point list for ages 11-12.

Golf is a priority for Yun but beyond the course he said he'd like to become a missionary.

As for free time, the Phil Mickelson fan, who lists Sandpines Golf Links in Oregon as his favorite layout, said he likes playing basketball and hanging out with his friends.
