TOURNAMENT RECAPS

U.S. Junior Amateur

Brian Harman won the U.S. Junior July 26, parring the 14th hole to seal his 5-and-4 victory over Jordan Cox.

The 16-year-old Harman, who is ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, applied early pressure, making a 25-foot birdie putt at Columbia Country Club's 357-yard, par-4 third hole. That birdie began a stretch in which Harman won six of the next eight holes to lead 5 up after 10. His clinching par on the 14th came on a 2-foot putt.

By making the final, Harman and Cox qualify for the U.S. Amateur Aug. 18-24 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.

U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur

Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff rallied from five down after eight holes July 26 to defeat defending champion In-Bee Park, 1 up, in the final match at the U.S. Girls' Junior.

Wuesthoff, a 16-year-old South Korean who came to the United States four years ago to hone her game, won six of the next nine after being five down to beat Park at Brooklawn Country Club.

''I thought she was going to win,'' said Wuesthoff, who lives in Toms River, N.J., with her aunt and uncle who adopted her. ''I didn't try to win. All I wanted was to make the top 16 to get an exemption the next two years. I don't know what happened to her.''

AJGA Steel City Junior Classic

Brian Belden shot a 1-under 71 in the final round of the AJGA Steel City Junior Classic for a one-stroke victory, his first AJGA title, July 24 at Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa.

Belden -- who began the final round three shots out of the lead but carded four birdies in his closing 18 to take the title -- finished at 217 (74-72-71) and was followed by Greg Rodgers (70-73-75).

''The worst thing you can do in this kind of tournament is worry about what other people are doing,'' Belden said. ''You can only control what you can do, not what others do. Today, I won it on the greens.''

In the girls division, Nannette Hill (75) was two strokes behind Tiffany Tavee starting the final nine holes but rallied for a five-stroke victory.

AJGA Marshallia Ranch Junior Classic

It was a day of firsts as Garrett Sapp and Allison Goodman. Both claimed their inaugural AJGA titles at the Marshallia Ranch Junior Classic July 24 in Lompoc, Calif.

Sapp closed with 70 for a 211 total while Goodman cruised to a four-shot victory over Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana.

Sapp birdied No. 18 to clinch the victory.

''It was really close after the front,'' said Sapp, who began his final round with a 2-over 37. ''I wasn't expecting to win after that, I just wanted to finish well.''

Despite a 4 over front nine, Goodman carded two birdies to finish her final-round 77 and secure her first AJGA title. Goodman had a 218 total and Tangtiphaiboontana (79) was at 222.

AJGA hp Junior Classic at English Turn

If Jennifer Pandolfi needed an extra boost heading into this week's McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship she found it July 24 at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans.

The 17-year-old Navarre, Fla., resident followed her opening 75 with rounds of 70-71 to win the AJGA hp Junior Classic at English Turn.

''I played smart but aggressive,'' Pandolfi said. ''I did miss a lot of short putts on the front nine, but that's something I can focus on for my next tournament. In a way this is my tune-up for the AJGA McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship.''

Pandolfi's 216 total was 14 shots better than runner-up Sookhee Baek (74--230).

In the boys division, Beck Troutman's final-round 69 was good for a three-shot victory over Eric Shriver.

AJGA I.R.I. Golf Group Highland Creek Junior

Glenn Northcutt birdied the first playoff hole July 24 to win the AJGA I.R.I. Golf Group Highland Creek Junior in Charlotte, N.C.

Northcutt (74-71-76) birdied Highland Creek's Nos. 3, 12, and 14 holes in the final round and finished 54 holes tied with Clint Smith (70-75-76), Noah Goldman (75-70-76) and Ryan Leveque (80-68-73) at 221. In the playoff, Smith and Goldman made par and Leveque bogeyed.

Qualifier medalist Dolores White won the girls division after a final-round 74 for a 226 total. Margaret Shirley (76) was second at 228.

The victory is White's first on the AJGA. She finished eighth at the AJGA Nike Golf Junior All-Star at Jacksonville and 12th at the AJGA Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek.

Monterey Junior Open

Sofia Janer went wire-to-wire in winning the Monterey (Calif.) Junior Open July 27 while J.J.. Scurich needed a final-round 70 to take the boys division title.

Janer opened with 75 and improved with each round on her way to a 220 total, four strokes clear of Jennifer Shipley (79-72-73).

Scurich, however, needed his steady final round to hold off Kyle Dowden (75-74-69) and Michael Jensen (76-78-66) who both finished at 218. Michael O'Brien also made a run, closing with a tournament-best 66 to finish in fourth at 220.

PGA Junior Series at Morgantown (W.Va.)

Marlowe Boukis and Whitney Neuhauser put their names in the record books July 23, shooting final-round 73s to win their respective divisions at the PGA Junior Series event in Morgantown, W.Va.

The closing 73s set the Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa course record for females.

Boukis (80-78-73) entered the final round of the girls' 16-17 division in third, trailing co-leaders Meredith Godwin and Katy Barrett by three strokes. After a solid start, she birdied No. 9 to secure the title with her 231 total.

Neuhauser's final-round 73 lifted her to an 18-stroke victory in the girls 13-15 division. Neuhauser (79-83-73) had a 235 total.

Chase Carpenter (74-77-76) rallied from two shots down to win the boys 13-15 division and Greg Turcotte (74-71) won the 16-17 division with a 145 total.

ELLIOTT: DON'T EVER GIVE UP

After seeing what happened at the U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Girls' Junior last week I thought of a famous saying.

''Don't give up, don't ever give up.''

A little over 10 years ago I remember watching the first ESPN ESPY Awards show with my older brother. It was towards the end when renowned basketball coach Jim Valvano had just received the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. In his acceptance speech Valvano, who was dying of cancer, moved everyone listening and touched on some very important topics.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff
Age: 16
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 9th
Residence: Toms River, N.J.
The Skinny: Wuesthoff exceeded everyone's expectations, including her own, July 26 when she won the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. Wuesthoff battled back from a 5-hole deficit to defeat defending champion In-Bee Park in an 18-hole thriller.

Wuesthoff's caddie, Gregor Steger, played a key role in her victory over Park. Steger, 39, joined Brooklawn Country Club's caddie ranks at the age of 10. Wuesthoff was grateful to have an older, more experienced caddie on the bag during her championship run.

''I didn't want a good-looking boy who might distract me,'' joked Wuesthoff.

The 16-year-old moved from South Korea to Toms River, N.J., four years ago to lived with her aunt and uncle who adopted her.

''I always wanted a girl,'' said Wuesthoff's aunt, Sukhee, who has two grown sons. ''And she gave me a full-time mom job.''

When she's not honing her golf skills, Wuesthoff can be found in a nearby mall shopping for shoes or on her computer updating her personal Web site.

The timid, self-described perfectionist will be a rising junior at Toms River North High School. The two-time New Jersey High School Girls champion currently has her sites set on UCLA.

In divisions I and II, prospects are limited to five official visits, and only one paid visit per institution.

NCAA Division III schools also are allowed one expense-paid visit per campus, however, there is no limit on the number of paid visits if initial enrollment is at a division III college.

The NAIA has no limit on the number of recruiting visits a prospect may make.
