TOURNAMENT RECAPS

Canon Cup

The West team earned 12 of a possible 20 points in Day 3 singles play to overcome a two-point deficit and win the Canon Cup, 26-24, Aug. 7 at Sea Island (Ga.) Golf Club. The victory is the West's third consecutive in the annual matches that feature 20-player teams in a Ryder Cup-style format.

Texas' Randy Lowry got things rolling for the West with a 2-up victory over Chris Kirk while Hannah Jun of San Diego followed with a 1-up victory against U.S Girls' Junior champion Sukjin Wuesthoff.

Luke List scored the East's first point of the day, a 3-and-2 victory over Seung Su Han and Jenny Suh put the East back on top with a 7-and-6 rout of Lauren Espinosa. The West took control after that, winning five and halving two of the next seven matches.

AJGA Transamerica Junior at Denver

Garrett Merrell rallied from four strokes down to win the Transamerica Junior Aug. 8, his first AJGA title.

Merrell finished with three birdies and four bogeys on his way to a final-round 1-over 71. He finished with a 218 total at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo., a shot ahead of second-round leader Jesse Barnsley (72-71-76).

''I hit the ball solidly all day and never made any big errors,'' Merrell said. ''I drove the ball well and gave myself a chance at every hole.''

The Transamerica was Merrell's sixth AJGA event and first AJGA victory.

Staci Smoot, 17, carded a final-round 75 to take the girls division title. The two-time Minnesota Junior State champion finished at 233 after rounds of 78-80-75. Second-round co-leader Ashley Tait took second after carding a final-round 78.

AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational

Two delays totaling nearly four hours did little to deter Dan Doyle Aug. 7 at the AJGA Kroger Junior Invitational. Doyle closed with a final-round 71 despite the delays and took the boys division title by two strokes at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.

''The whole week I have been hitting my irons really well,'' said Doyle, who was third at the AJGA Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek and 12th at the AJGA Boyne Highlands Junior. ''My putts were dropping really easy because of my good iron shots.''

Teddy Collins (75-72-68) was second at 215.

In the girls division, Mandy Goins had rounds of 73-75-72 for a 220 total and a three-stroke victory over Carly Truitt (77-76-70).

Goins started her final round strong with a 25-foot putt for birdie on No. 1. She added birdies on Nos. 7 and 16.

''The conditions were different [after the delay],'' said the 18-year-old Wake Forest signee. ''This is a sweet win for me because it was my last AJGA event.''

AJGA Marsh Junior at Hawk Pointe

Megan Grehan led the AJGA Marsh Junior at Hawk Pointe from wire-to-wire, shooting 74 in the final round to hold on for a two-stroke victory.

Grehan, who had rounds of 72-75-74, carded two birdies in the final round en route to her first trip to an AJGA winner's circle at Hawk Pointe Golf in Washington, N.J.

''I didn't make it easy for myself today. I didn't hit many greens, but had some good up-and-downs late in the day,'' Grehan said. ''I was starting to feel nervous around No. 11 but I birdied No. 12 to take a four-stroke lead.''

Brian Belden had an eagle and three birdies in his final round to win the boys division title by two strokes.

The victory is the Pennsylvania junior's second AJGA triumph in as many starts. He won the Steel City Junior Classic two weeks ago.

Greg Rodgers and Jason Elliott finished tied for second at 207.

Despite incessant rain which washed out all but one round of the Callaway Golf/PGA Junior Series event at Blue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon, Conn., J.J. Amoruso shot 73 to take the boys 16-17 division title.

Amoruso opened play Aug. 6 on a sour note with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, but bounced back with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-14. Cory Blenkush and Brian Steeves tied for second, one shot back.

Katy Barrett claimed her second Junior Series title, shooting 75 to finish two shots clear of Caroline Kerns.

In the playoff, Park and Bickerton bowed out on the first and second holes, respectively. Two extra holes later Gahir edged Potter for the title.

Isabelle Gendreau almost joined the four in the playoff, but she missed a short putt for bogey on the final hole to finish at 9 over.

TAIT: DARK AGES OF BRITISH GOLF
NEED TO COME TO AN END, SOON

The Weetabix Women's British Open should have been a celebration of British women's golf. Instead, it provided a stark reminder that women's golf is dying on these isles, and no one knows what to do to resuscitate a part of the game that has been in terminal decline for years.

Two weeks ago when young Brits Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty played well in the Scandinavian Masters on the PGA European Tour, the lack of a strong young British women's challenge at Lytham was conspicuous. There's a simple reason for that: There are very few young British women snapping at the heels of established stars such as Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas, Janice Moodie, Mhairi McKay and Trish Johnson.

NEWS AND NOTES

* Byoung Park describes his 16-year-old daughter as a ''gamer.'' In prime-time events Jane Park has a way of rising to the occasion, and her U.S. Women's Amateur debut was no exception.

Park bested Paula Creamer, 2 and 1, Aug. 9 in a semifinal grudge match that featured two of the nation's top teen-agers.

''When I practice with her on the golf course she's not really focused,'' said Byoung Park, a former single-digit handicapper who serves as his daughter's primary instructor. ''But in the golf tournament she's a totally different person.''

Park morphed into a birdie-making machine this week in Gladwyne, Pa. In her first four matches Park never trailed, recording 16 birdies. After defeating defending champion Becky Lucidi in the quarterfinals Park set her sights on Creamer, a familiar opponent and former Junior Solheim Cup teammate.

Park's week ended in a 2-and-1 championship match loss to winner Virada Nirapathpongporn.

The mid-year championships will also act qualifiers for the season-ending Tour Championship as well as Team USA for the North America Cup.

* Short Shots: Led by Dustin Andres' 140 total, Oregon (435) won the Hogan Cup played at Riverside Country Club in Portland, Ore. Both Northern and Southern California tied for second at 439. PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Patton Kizzire
Age: 17
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: 13th (as of Aug. 10)
Residence: Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Skinny: Kizzire has been playing golf since he was 6 and both mom (Sally) and dad (Maxie) factored into Kizzire's decision to start playing.

Last month Kizzire advanced to the final four at the U.S. Junior, losing to eventual winner Brian Harman.

''Its been great until now. You have to look at the big picture and I know I played well,'' said Kizzire following his loss.

Kizzire won the Alabama State High School Championship, the Blue Grey Invitational, the Blue White Invitational and placed third at the SJGT Grand National and the Alabama Golf Association Amateur. His lowest rounds this year are a pair of 65s at the Indian Hills Invitational and the Blue White Invitational.

He also had a hole-in-one this season at the AJGA Avila Junior Classic in July, where he placed fifth.

''I have a lucky white shirt,'' said Kizzire, who wore it during his U.S. Junior qualifier.

While he is not playing golf he likes to play ping-pong, basketball and tennis. He also like to hunt and fish. His favorite player was Payne Stewart and says that Stewart has inspired him.

''His death made me realize that life is a gift, so enjoy it while you can,'' Kizzire said.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
The best time to register for the NCAA Clearinghouse is after a student's junior-year grades are posted to the transcript.

Any change of grade related to core-course work completed in grades 9-11 must be reflected on the final (after graduation) transcript received by the Clearinghouse. Any grade change related to course work in grade 12, after the Clearinghouse receives the final transcript, may be reviewed solely through the submission of an initial-eligibility waiver.

Generally, only courses completed in grades 9-12 may be used to satisfy core-course curriculum requirements. However, if a student-athlete would be certified based on the inclusion of core courses completed in the eighth grade, an NCAA member institution may request the Clearinghouse include such courses as core units.
