TOURNAMENT RECAPS

AJGA's Ping Phoenix Junior Championship

Sihwan Kim overcame a two-stroke deficit Aug. 24 to win the AJGA's Ping Phoenix Junior Championship. The 14-year-old carded the day's lowest round (5-under 67) en route to a three-stroke victory.

''This whole week felt lucky,'' Kim said. ''Today everything was perfect and right at the pin.''

His victory at ASU's Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., capped a solid season that also included a victory at the AJGA Nike Junior All-Star Classic at Colonial.

Kim's 206 total was three clear of runner-up Matthew Pierce Jr. (72-67-70--209).

In the girls division, Ki-Shui Liao used three consecutive birdies on the front nine to solidify her lead. Liao shot a final-round 68 to edge Tiffany Joh and Angela Park by three strokes.

''I was putting great all week,'' Liao said. ''This tournament really taught me that I could shoot under 70 consistently. That in itself has definitely put more confidence in my game, especially going into the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic.''

AJGA's Nike Junior All-Star Classic at Toftrees Resort

Jimmy Markovitz was certain he was bound for a playoff after his approach shot on No. 18 came up short. Instead, Markovitz chipped in for birdie Aug. 21 to win the AJGA's Nike Junior All-Star Classic at Toftrees Resort.

Markovitz shot a closing 71 for a 4-under 212 total at Toftrees Resort in State College, Pa., to edge Mu Hu (213). Peter Uihlein finished alone in third at even-par 216.

''Coming into this tournament, all I wanted to do was play well enough to get into the Nike Golf Junior All-Star Championship,'' Markovitz said. ''As the week progressed, I wanted to win.''

Natalie Sheary played consistently with rounds of 77-77-78 to win in her first AJGA tournament. Michele Grilli (75-85-76) came in second at 236.

MAZUR: CHOOSING RIGHT
CAREER PATH IS UP TO YOU

They're nearly the same age and equally dominant on the golf course, yet suddenly Aree Song and Casey Wittenberg are about to embark on completely different career paths.

Neither is giving up the game. Neither is trading in their spikes for spit-shined leather dress shoes. Instead, Song, 17, has decided to forego her college days at the University Florida in favor of a quick transition to the professional ranks. Wittenberg, meanwhile, will stay the course and hit the books at Oklahoma State University this year.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
School is starting and official practices have begun for college football and will commence this week in other fall sports including golf. You might be surprised at what is required during the first day of official practice at NCAA schools.

The first item is a 2-hour meeting for lectures on NCAA rules including drug use, gambling, amateurism, academic eligibility and filling out forms giving permission to be tested for drugs and verification of amateur status. This meeting is followed by a physical examination.

If everything is completed early enough coaches and players head out to practice. NCAA rules prohibit practice before completing these meetings and exams so student-athletes can generally count on an early start for the day.
