TOURNAMENT RECAPS
AJGA McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls
Jane Park broke an eight-year tournament record on her way to winning
the AJGA McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship.
Park's 11-under 202 total July 31 at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington,
Del., was four shots better than the previous record, set by Cristie
Kerr in 1995, and good for a four-stroke victory over Paula
Creamer.
Park had rounds of 65-69-68 while Creamer, No. 1 in the
Golfweek/Titleist Performance Index, was at 206 after rounds of
67-69-70.
Amie Cochran finished in third place at 208 and last week's finalist
at the U.S. Girls' Junior, In-Bee Park and champion Sukjin-Lee
Wuesthoff, finished tied for fourth at 215.
AJGA hp Boys Junior Championship
Four strokes out of the lead with 18 holes to play, Tom Davis quickly
closed the gap on leader Trent Leon with a front-nine 35 and cruised
to his first AJGA victory Aug. 1 at the hp Boys Junior Championship.
Despite a bogey at his final hole at Westin Innisbrook Resort in Palm
Harbor, Fla., Davis -- who was playing in his second AJGA event -- shot a
closing 69 for a 287 total, one shot ahead of George Gandranata
(74-72-70-72).
Leon finished tied for third with Kevin Schultz at 4 over.
AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior
John Kelly and Mayumi Kobayashi weathered unpredictable winds
on their way to victory July 31 at the AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior.
Kelly entered the final round with a five-stroke lead but struggled in the
wind with four bogeys and a double bogey. He managed a final-round 75 to
finish at 5 under, four strokes clear of Pat Collogan at Nicklaus
Golf Club at LionsGate in Overland Park, Kan.
Kobayashi led all three rounds and pulled out a two-shot victory over
Mandi McConnell despite a final-round 78. McConnell, a freshman-to-be
at Michigan State, carded a final-round 77, the day's best in the girls
division, for a 226 total.
AJGA ClubCorp Junior Players Championship
Julieta Granada finished with a tournament-record 216 total for a
nine-stroke victory July 31 at AJGA ClubCorp Junior Players.
Granada (73-74-69-216) kick-started her final round with a birdie on No. 4
to pull away from the field and sealed the title when she chipped-in from 15
yards at the 17th for birdie.
Ann Laney (75-75-75) was second at 225 while Jennifer Davis
(76-76-75), Caterina Wang (71-76-80) and Eleanor Tucker
(74-73-80) tied for third.
Tom Miles finished 54 holes at 7-under 209, four strokes in front of
the field for the boys division title at Homestead Resort in Hot Springs,
Va.

for second at 213.

Group Future Links Western Championship at Highlands Golf Club in Edmonton,
Alberta.
Blackwater had rounds of 68-68-72 for a four-stroke victory over Blaine
Kruger (70-68-74) while Scott Markham (70-71-72) was another shot
back.
Kira Meixner carded a career-best 73 to take the girls division title
with a 225 total. Kaitlin Troop finished second at 231, while
Ashley Olynick was third at 238.
BMO Financial Group Future Links Atlantic Championship
Marc Bourgeois won his second consecutive BMO Financial Group Future
Links Atlantic Championship July 31, closing with 72 for a five-shot victory
at Mill River Golf Course in Wookstock, Prince Edward Island.
Bourgeois, the second repeat champion this year on the RCGA Future Links
circuit, had a 219 total. David Williamson, the only player to shoot
a round under par (third-round 71), was runner-up.
In the girls division, Stephanie Sherlock shot a final-round 77 for a
235 total to claim her first Future Links title. Laura Harris
finished second at 241 while Jennifer Thomson and Jennifer
Brine tied for third at 243.
Callaway Golf/PGA Junior Series at State College, Pa.

while Raymond Sheedy (71-76-75) was three strokes back.
Courtney Tincher came from behind to claim top honors in the girls
16-17 division over Meredith Godwin. Tincher had a 237 total after
rounds of 77-82-78.
Optimist International Junior Championship
Matt Bassler's third-round 73 turned out to be enough to propel him
into the winner's circle Aug. 2 at the rain-shortened Optimist International
Junior.
Bassler's three-round 214 total was two strokes ahead of Michael
Giammaresi when the final round at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens,
Fla., was washed out by rain.
Jayvie Agojo had a 227 total to edge Mary Calderon for the
girls division title. Calderon finished at 228 after a closing 73 while
Agojo carded a final-day 77.
Boys Junior America's Cup
Led by Alex Williams, Oregon narrowly defeated Northern California
July 31 to win the Boys Junior America's Cup.

front of Northern California at Rio Secco Golf Club in Las Vegas.

ELLIOTT: MATCH PLAY FAVORS
Every year in junior golf a select group of players get to taste match play
competition. It's a shame more can't do the same.
High profile junior events featuring match play include the U.S.
Girls'/Junior Amateur, the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic, the Junior Ryder
Cup/Junior Solheim Cup and the AJGA's Canon Cup. Getting into one of these
events is a challenge, however. Players must qualify or be selected based on
their performance which inevitably leaves a good portion of the junior golf
public wanting.

NEWS AND NOTES
* The year of the junior continues. Although rain has delayed the stroke
play portion of qualifying at the U.S. Women's Amateur at Philadelphia
Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa., the nation's top juniors continued to shine
Aug. 6 against their older counterparts. Aree Song took medalist
honors (71-67--138) while Michelle Wie (73-67) was second, two
strokes back. Top-ranked Paula Creamer and Girls' Junior finalist
In-Bee Park also were among the top-8 qualifiers.
* Creamer highlights the ten players who earned a spot on the 2003 U.S. PING
Junior Solheim Cup team. The top ten players on the points list through Aug.
1 earned invitations to the event -- which will be played Sept. 8-10 at
Bokskogen Golf Club in Bara, Sweden -- and the two captain's picks will be
made following this week's Canon Cup.
PING Junior Solheim Cup -- U.S. team
* Jared Gosiee, a Plantations Junior Golf Tour first-team All
America, has been diagnosed with leukemia. He is undergoing treatment at
Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
* The following AJGA qualifiers have been canceled: BMO Financial Group
Future Links Junior at Okanagan, Aug. 23 (British Columbia), BMO Financial
Group Future Links Junior at Caledon Woods, Aug. 25 (Ontario).

PLAYER TO WATCH
''I had (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery this past spring after making a
lay-up in my last basketball game,'' said Klaasen, whose lowest 18-hole
score was an 11-under 61 carded at Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester,
Mich.
Klaasen recovered, however, and advanced to the third round of match play at
last month's U.S. Junior.
He was named the Michigan Junior Golf Tour's '02 Sportsman of the Year and
was selected to the '01 U.S. squad for the World Junior Cup in Scotland but
his most memorable golf experience was playing the Old Course at St.
Andrews.
