RECRUITING
CENTRAL Be specific. Don't just write, ''I won my club junior championship,''
or ''I came in second in the local junior tournament.'' Scores are not
mentioned in these examples, thus they lack value. Also scores from four
or five years ago, even career lows, don't have much meaning.
If you are looking to impress a coach, send your resume indicating that
your level of tournament play is equal to or better than his/her top
players. Most coaches are looking to recruit No. 1 or No. 2 players for
their team, and most likely they already have several players competing
for the fourth and fifth spots in the traveling squad.

PLAYER TO
WATCH ''I just wanted to try (qualifying) to see how my game matched up to
the older players,'' said Pierce, who first broke par when he was 9,
shooting 66 at Marbella Country Club in California from the red tees.
''This is the first tournament I've played where I've had to travel. I was
very nervous on the first tee the first day and a little intimidated. But
all the players treated me as if I were their age and made me feel
comfortable out there.
''My goal was to make match play, but I'm not too disappointed. It was
a great experience and just a lot of fun playing out there. I definitely
learned a lot, especially to play more maturely and to not always go for
the flagstick.''
