The leading qualifier of the juniors was 16-year-old Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla., qualifying fourth at 144. Going the furthest was 17-year-old Nicole Perrot of Chile. Perrot, who won the U.S. Girls' Junior a week earlier in Mission Hills, Kan., lost to Meredith Duncan in the championship in 37 holes.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
August is a time when many juniors will be writing resumes detailing summer successes to coaches. Be sure to include enough detail in reporting your play so coaches will be able to evaluate your ability. Coaches want to know the level of the event, scores and your finish. Be sure to include par and yardage of the course with course rating and any unusual weather conditions. This helps paint a picture for the coach regarding your play that week.

Be specific. Don't just write, ''I won my club junior championship,'' or ''I came in second in the local junior tournament.'' Scores are not mentioned in these examples, thus they lack value. Also scores from four or five years ago, even career lows, don't have much meaning.

If you are looking to impress a coach, send your resume indicating that your level of tournament play is equal to or better than his/her top players. Most coaches are looking to recruit No. 1 or No. 2 players for their team, and most likely they already have several players competing for the fourth and fifth spots in the traveling squad.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Matthew Pierce Jr.
Age: 12
Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: unranked
Residence: San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
Profile: Beginning this fall he will be a seventh-grader at St. Margaret's Middle School. He was the youngest competitor in the starting field at this year's U.S. Junior Amateur after shooting a career-best 7-under-par 137 at Warner Springs (Calif.) Golf Club to qualify. He missed the 64-player match-play cut at the U.S. Junior after rounds of 80-77--157.

''I just wanted to try (qualifying) to see how my game matched up to the older players,'' said Pierce, who first broke par when he was 9, shooting 66 at Marbella Country Club in California from the red tees. ''This is the first tournament I've played where I've had to travel. I was very nervous on the first tee the first day and a little intimidated. But all the players treated me as if I were their age and made me feel comfortable out there.

''My goal was to make match play, but I'm not too disappointed. It was a great experience and just a lot of fun playing out there. I definitely learned a lot, especially to play more maturely and to not always go for the flagstick.''
