NEWS AND NOTES
* With Hurricane Isabel closing in on the east coast of the United States,
American Junior Golf Association officials have rescheduled the AJGA
Ashworth Postseason Junior at Hagerstown (Md.).
The event was to be played Sept. 19-21 at Black Rock Golf Course in
Hagerstown, Md., but the threat of Isabel's rain and wind prompted officials
to reschedule for Oct. 3-5.
* The European Junior Solheim Cup team set the pace for their professional
counterparts, defeating the United States 13-11 in the two-day matches at
Bokskogens Golf Club. Sweden's Louise Stahle, the top-ranked European
junior, and Minea Blomqvist each won three matches and helped Europe
avenge last year's loss in the inaugural Junior Solheim Cup in suburban
Minneapolis.
''I'm thrilled over the victory and it was a lot of fun coaching these
young, talented players,'' European captain Helen Alfredsson said.
Allison Goodman earned the most points for the United States with a
2-0-1 record. Paula Creamer, Golfweek's top-ranked junior, and
Jane Park, runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur, each finished with
2-1 records.
* An hour after the Solheim Cup opening ceremony a single familiar face
remained on the practice range -- Annika Sorenstam. After getting
dressed up for the pre-tournament festivities, Sorenstam changed back into
her Team Europe uniform late Thursday afternoon and headed to the far left
portion of the range so not many would notice.
But when she got there, the U.S. Junior Solheim Cup squad was practicing and
trying out new Ping equipment. None of the 12 members of the squad bothered
the world's No. 1 player, but just stared and watched in awe as she hit
balls.
* The next Golfweek Junior Golf Report will be published Oct. 1
followed every other week with a new issue. The Report will return to a
once-a-week publication schedule in April.
* Michelle Wie held her own Sept. 15 in a foursome that included LPGA
Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, two-time major champion John Daly
and PGA Tour member Hank Kuehne.
The team of Lopez and Kuehne won the nine-hole skins event at Hillcrest
Country Club, but only Kuehne had a better score than the 13-year-old from
Honolulu in the Kraft/Nabisco Shoot-Out, a $25,000 skins game benefiting the
golf programs at Boise State and the University of Idaho.
* The top boys player from the International Junior Golf Tour will earn an
invitation to the 2004 Monroe Invitational. The event, a
Golfweek/Titleist Amateur ranked event, is played annually at Monroe
Golf Club in Pittsford, N.Y. For more information, visit www.IJGT.com or call 843.785.2444.
* There was more on the mind of Bearden (Tenn.) High School's Chase Carroll
than golf as the Bulldogs played in the District 4-AAA tournament Sept. 15
at Lambert Acres. There was a five-hour period for Bearden golfers to escape
the reality of their coach's death. In their minds, through every step of
the District 4-AAA tournament, it was like Scott McMurray was still
there.
Emotions were heavy as the Bulldogs played the day after their coach of two
years had died from injuries suffered in a car wreck late Saturday night.
Bearden High School officials, including athletic director Lynn Hill,
were on hand to offer support to the players, whose squad finished fourth at
325.
* The deadline for entry into this year's Golfweek/Precept Junior
Invitational is Sept. 22. Entries have already been mailed for the 54-hole
event that will be played Oct. 12-13 at Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset
Beach, N.C. For a list of players already committed to this year's
tournament, visit www.golfw
eek.com/articles/2003/juniorgolf/boys/35801.asp. For more information,
visit www.golfweek.com/events/
or call 877.805.4653.
* Southeastern Junior Golf Tour member Brad Willis of Montgomery,
Ala., died Sept. 6 due to injuries suffered in a car accident. Donations for
a building fund at Willis' school (Macon East Academy) are being accepted in
his name at Macon East Academy -- Brad Willis Memorial Fund (Bill Hamrick,
9920 Dogwood Ct., Montgomery, Ala., 36117).
* Short shots: David Lipsky of La Canada, Calif., shot a
final-round 71 Sept. 13 to close the weekend at 4-under-par 140 and take
medalist honors at the AJGA Ashworth Postseason Junior at Rancho Mirage. The
victory is Lipsky's first national title and comes in his first AJGA
tournament. . . . Jim Hasley was named Junior Golf Leader of the Year
by the Iowa section of the PGA.

Hoggard: Slices, snap-hooks
Slices and snap-hooks from a spectacular summer season:
* So Aree Song is trading books and study groups at the University of
Florida for birdies and player meetings on the LPGA.
Although Song's move was hardly a surprise, it does signal what could become
a disturbing trend. Despite assurances to the contrary, a bold jump to the
play-for-pay ranks -- be it to the LPGA or Nationwide Tours -- is probably
in Michelle Wie's near future.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
While writing to coaches detailing their summer play it is important for
potential student-athletes to address letters personally to coaches and
include a few sentences letting them know why you're writing. Coaches know
they are being blanketed with form letters when they receive
non-personalized correspondents along with resumes with grades and test
scores that do not fit the school academically. This message tells the coach
that the prospect didn't learn much about the school before writing. Check
the newest edition of the Ping College Golf Guide for additional help
finding the right school.
