GIHM: DON'T LET WINTER
CHILL COMPETITIVE JUICES

It's September, which means the start of the school year for most junior golfers. It also means that fall and winter are right around the corner.

For some players, shorter days and cooler temperatures will not affect how much or how often they practice and play. For most, however, it will be a long, grinding winter, fraught with cold, rain and maybe even snow.

NEWS AND NOTES
* Ken Morton Sr. of Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif. won the PGA of America's Junior Golf Leader of the Year award. Morton, a Northern California PGA Board member since 1996, preceded this year's national honor by winning the 1996 and 1998 Section Junior Golf Leader Awards.

Morton created SAY Golf -- the acronym for the Sacramento Area Youth Golf Program, which serves more than 3,200 boys and girls annually -- in 1983. SAY Golf -- which Morton designed to save local high school golf teams -- spawned a junior golf scholarship program.

The SAY Golf Development Department has raised more than $1 million over the past four years to improve the William Land Golf Course, one of the original First Tee sites in America.

* Short shots: The Miccosukee Golf Resort will host the last Continental U.S. stop on the seven-city tour of the Teens On The Green World Championship Junior Golf Series on Nov. 9-10. . . . Junior Amateur Golf Scholars (JAGS) held its annual Player's Award Banquet Sept. 10 at Cypress Golf Club in Los Alamitos, Calif. Kyle Warren, Los Alamitos, Calif., and Amanda Pentecost, Lakewood, Calif., were named the 2002 JAGS Players of the Year.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Brittany Lincicome
Age: 16 (Her birthday is on Sept. 19)
Golfweek/Titleist Ranking: Fifth (final 2001-02 rankings)
Residence: Pinellas Park, Fla.
The Skinny: As the Florida high school golf season kicks into high gear, the Seminole High School boys team will have Brittany Lincicome leading the way. Lincicome, a long-hitting junior from Pinellas Park, is the boy's squad's No. 1 player.

She'll be taking some time off, however, to compete in the Ping Junior Solheim Cup Sept. 16-18 at Oak Ridge Country Club in Hopkins, Minn.

No. 5 in the final 2001-02 Golfweek/Titleist Rankings, Lincicome is coming off a solid summer that included a second-place finish at the AJGA Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic Sept. 2. She also had runner-up finishes at the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions and the Florida Girls' Championship, where she lost to In-Bee Park by one stroke.

Lincicome says that her most memorable tournament was the 2001 AJGA TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Junior at Chateau Elan. Lincicome carded a second-round 65 to finished four ahead of Aree Song Wongluekiet.

After playing baseball for five years and softball for three, Lincicome decided to make golf her main focus. ''Since I'm getting more dedicated to golf, that's all I concentrate on.''

When off the course, however, Lincicome enjoys listening to Vitamin C and hanging out with her friends.

RECRUITING CENTRAL
In recent years, more prospective NCAA student-athletes have failed to be a ''qualifier'' for freshman academic eligibility due to deficiency in their core-course requirement than the number of students who have failed to meet the SAT or ACT minimums.

To compete as a freshman at NCAA Division I or II schools, a student must successfully complete 13 core courses with a satisfactory GPA in those courses as defined in the NCAA Guide. The NCAA has a sliding scale to determine eligibility allowing for a lower core-course GPA with higher test scores or lower test scores with a higher GPA. Since these core courses must be completed during grades 9-12, it is important to start early in your high school career with a solid curriculum to ensure you satisfy this requirement
