PLAYER TO WATCH
Name: Ryan Blaum

Age: 17

Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 50th

Residence: Miami

The skinny: Blaum made it to match play at the U.S. Amateur at East Lake, defeating 2000 U.S. Amateur Public Links runner-up Wayne Raath in the opening round before losing to John Carlson, 1 up, in the round of 32.

August was a pretty busy month for Blaum, a senior at Miami Westminster High School, where baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez went to school. (Blaum also plays guard for the basketball team, and last season made eight 3-pointers in one game).

Blaum made it to match play at the U.S. Junior after shooting 66 in qualifying, finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at AJGA events in Rome, Ga., and Tampa, then made a nice splash at the Amateur. He and Daniel Summerhays were the only high school players to make it to match play at East Lake.

ôItÆs been really exciting,ö Blaum said. ôI may have lost my match, but I played solid on a very tough golf course, and IÆll leave with all the confidence in the world.ö

Blaum is an excellent student who carries a GPA of 3.8 and has visits to four colleges planned this autumn: In no particular order, he plans to tour the campuses of Wake Forest, Duke, SMU and Oklahoma State.

Blaum, who works on his swing with David Leadbetter, has been something of a late bloomer, but this summer, everything seemed to fall into place, and he raised the level of his game. He departed East Lake deservedly proud of his performance, anxious to see what lies ahead.

ôI think my stock just went up,ö he said, smiling.
